I have a set of floor mats in a 91 Acura Legend that are supposed to be black, but it seems they have been slightly sun bleached and are turning greenish. I would like to try to give them a dye job as it isn't possible to get factory mats for this car anymore. I looked quickly online and the only thing i can find is a type of paint that says it can be used for carpet, but it seems for very low cut carpet. Though i really don't know.
Does anyone know if this will work or should I look at another product? I have seen dying 'kits' that are well above $100, and I am not interested in spending that type of money. If that is my only option, i'll live with the greenish carpets!
I've used quite a bit of that DupliColor stuff and it does work fairly well, you just have to be careful not to get it too thick as it makes the carpet fibers very stiff when it is allowed to harden too far.
What I usually do is make sure the carpets are very slightly damp before applying a thin coat, let it dry for 15-20 minutes before brushing the carpet to "fluff" the fibers, then add a second coat. After that has dried for a half hour or so just come back, brush the carpet again, and leave it to sit for an hour before touching it again.
Now, having said that, I will say that using a similar technique, I get better results with SEM aerosol carpet dye. You can get SEM brand dye from PBE jobbers usually.
I also looked at eBay and found a number of sources that make OEM-style custom fitted floor mat kits for your car that sell anywhere from $50-60:
Ahh, i might have to try the Duplicolor and just take my time and use it sparingly.
Thanks for looking for some replacements, but they aren't the same as the factory with the embroidered 'ACURA' in it. While I like them new, for trying to sell the car, enthusiasts really like the original mats in there, and the interior of my car is almost perfect except for those mats!
