carnuba comparison

has anyone done a comparison between mothers pure carnuba and meguiars deep crystal carnuba? or atleast tried both, and could suggest one.. i have mothers pure carnuba, and i really like it. I always try new products, and i was just wondering if anyone else had tried the meguiard deep crystal carnuba before and had an opinion on it (durability, application, removal, etc.) thanks

jDizzle- Never tried the Mother's but the Deep Crystal did *NOT* make a favorable impression on me. Now this was a *long* time ago, and it might be different stuff these days, but I thought it was a crappy, low-end wax with nothing good going for it.

Application/removal was OK, but then I think most every wax is OK in that regard. Durability was poor, looks were blah, slickness was only so-so and was short-lived, dirt-shedding wasn't great. Yuck. Most any other Meguiar's wax would be a better choice IMO.

I'd go with Collinite if you want to try something different that's still reasonably priced. A tin of 476S or a bottle of 845 oughta last for *years* if you apply it properly thin, better long-run economy than the Deep Crystal by far and much better in any other respect too.

^^^ I agree.

Skip the Deep Crystal and walk further down the isle and grab a bottle of Meguiar's #26 Hi-Tech Yellow wax. It is much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much better than the Deep Crystal Carnuaba.

:2thumbs:

I've tried both. Megs DC#3 is ok looking with average durability. Not a bad product but un-remarkable. #26 is much better.

Mothers step 3 is a nice looking carnauba - similar to #16 - but average durability. *Don't get it on trim!*

Of the two, Mothers is better and a good OTC hard paste wax. Under-rated IMO.

It's been forever since I've used the DC3. I still have my bottle from 1996! As far as I can remember, it was ok. I do however really like Mothers pure carnauba wax. I have the paste. For some reason, I prefer paste waxes to most liquids.

The M26 is good too, one of my favorites.

The smell of non-cleaner Mother's carnauba wax is pretty intoxicating... But I have to agree, Meguiar's #26 Yellow Wax is probably the best stuff you'll find locally (if you don't have a Harbor Freight).

Mother's Step 3 Carnuaba Wax is intoxicating?

You have to be kidding. It has a nice tropical scent.

They must've changed the scent...mine smells nothing close to tropical.

I prefer the Mothers Pure Carnauba paste wax smell to just about any other more fruity/tropical scents. And yes, I too find it intoxicating. :xyxthumbs

i have both waxes. Mother's is slightly better in terms of looks and ease of use. Durability is a little below average on both. Mother's was a little smoother application and really made the flakes pop on black.

I sniffed it again...I consider it fruity but maybe more like a sweet bubble gum smell.

Heh heh, I bet that "Harbor Freight" bit refers to Collinite wax, which IMO might be the best OTC/non-boutique wax going.

Note that Collinite can be found in all sorts of places. I got my last bottle of 845 at the local Advance Auto Parts, and I've seen both it and 476S at my local autobody/paint supply place. I know people who've found both at marine supply stores too. If I needed an OTC wax, I'd pull out the yellow pages and call around for Collinite.

Being new to this caper, I thought I'd take a scientific approach to working out the best OTC products (well, I feel I can't trust the pimply faced kid behind the counter and am overwhelmed by the sheer number of products).

So I looked at the fact sheets and am now even more confused. For example, Mothers Pure Carnauba Wax is made up of

Naphtha (petroleum), heavy alkylate 265-067-2 25-50%

paraffinic, naphthenic solvent EEC No. 265-149-8 25-50%

Turpentine <10%

Paraffin wax is not carnauba wax, so what gives here :suspicious:

Eagle 1 Gel Wax for example, has

CARNAUBA WAX 8015-86-9 10-15%

BOEHMITE 1318-23-6 1.5-5%

ETHYLENE GLYCOL 107-21-1 1.5-5%

ALCOHOLS, C9-11, ETHOXYLATED 68439-46-3 1-1,5%

Presume the rest is water. At least here there is evidence of carnauba wax.

So very confused. :noidea:

Is the the mother's liquid? If so then I'm not surprised. Most liquid carnaubas have ~5% caranauba, and they probably don't list it. Perhaps Forest@Mothers will chime in here.

That said, I'd be very cautious about using MSDS to evaluate a product. I bet Mother's cleaner wax has even less actual wax in it, and I've gotten 3 months of durability out of it.

You can't base a product's performance simply off the MSDS sheet - it lists the components which required by law. You can list other components, but are not required to. Also, the % listed is in a range, not an absolute percentage.

Without getting into that big discussion, carnauba content does not correlate to longevity or which one is "best". And, as you know, other components are mixed with carnauba to help with application.

BTW, "paraffinic, naphthenic solvent" is not paraffin wax - it's a solvent. There's a considerable difference between "contains" and "is made up of".

Right, probably best to go by actual experiences, preferably ones that mirror *your* conditions and address *your* concerns.

E.g., that "paraffin" features prominently in Meguair's #16 and can make it seem like some fragile beauty wax that'd fail quickly in hot conditions. Not the case at all in practice.

Great feedback. :thx

The problem with the trial and error approach is that these products are 2-3x more expensive in Oz, so buying NXT Tech Wax 2 for $46 only to be disappointed is an expensive disappointment.

Will keep reading and learning from others.

Be honest about your goals and solicit feedback. As long as you can prioritize your needs, you will get good collective feedback. If you want everything in one bottle, you'll need to be a bit more realistic.
