Caring for paint on older cars

Hi all,

I was recently asked how well these modern products would work on older cars from the 60's and 70's. (to be specific a 1966 Chev Impala with original paint)

I was not able to get my hands on the car to do some testing so I thought I would ask here.

I've used Poorboys line up on 60's and 70's car with no problems. On single stage paint which I'm guessing your talking about for those years. I always cut to start then polish and then wax. I've not used a sealant on single stage so that is the only thing that I cannot advice on. Hope that helps

First off, congrats on having a car that age with original paint!! :wait

I've detailed a number of older OEM paint jobs as of recent. What I am finding is that you don't have to start with a mild abrasive to get the job done. I've have been claying the car, and then using a pure polish on the PC afterwards on the single stage paints. You probably know this, but "some" paint is going to move around (i.e. off on your pad) with elderly cars, so a Pure Polish is typically strong enough if the car is in decent shape.

However, I have used a medium abrasive with a rotary before, followed by a final polish on a PC. The reason was because I don't think the car had been detailed since the 70's :brick (although it was garaged and covered).

I've used a number of sealants before on SS paints as well. I still love the deep, wet-look of carunaba, and in reality, your not losing "much" durablity at all when comparing the two.

1. Wash with P21S Total Wash diluted 50%
2. Clay
3. Find an old tin of light light compound.( This could be the difficult part)
4. Polish with Pinnacle Paint Cleansing Lotion
5. Wax with Pinnacle Signature Series.


Nick, I wish it was my car.....it actually belongs to a mate of mine. It is one of those always garaged, not driven for 5 years, original owner passed away and it has been sold from the estate. In other words the kind of mid '60s classic which is almost impossible find. Actually specs are 4 door pillarless coupe, 327 V8, Powerglide Trans.

I've got one. 1968 Plymouth Satellite unrestored all original (minus a few bolt on parts). A great summer time cruiser :)
 
Very nice Derek, the paint looks to be in pretty good condition. What process are you using on it?

Thanks Dave. I started with clay. I totally recommend to claythese
old SS paint jobs.
Wrldof difference(as it is on any paint). Followed up with SSR1x2 and Nattysx2. all by hand.
Thje car has very little rust for a lifelong MI car. I bought it off the grandson of the original owner. 70k on the clock. Runs like a dream 273 v8 auto
 
I have a client with similar era vehicles. I have Sonus PWC, Sonus SFX1, and Menzerna FPII. Are these all safe to use?

I'm guessing the paints on older (single stage) vehicles are easier to remove defects from?

Bump.
I'm also interested in Carl's question. I have had several requests to detail some old classics (red 70 Corvette, 69 Camaro Conv., and 2 old Jags).
I have P21S GEPC, #9, and 3M PI III MG. Are any of those good for detailing SS paint?
