Cann't Remove Oxidation Plus Another Problem

Some of the early and mid 90's Honda cars had the roof molding painted the same color as the car. From my experience on working on a car that was about the same color and year, what you are seeing is CC failure. Further polishing will just make it worse than it is now.

it might be clearcoat failure but i dont think it looks that way in the picture i think its the glue of the tape cause if it was CC failure why is it only in that little channel?

Don't know why they fail that way. It looks just like the car I did back in November while I was visiting in Vegas. The only good part on the roof was the part covered by the sunroof visor.

Yes it was painted before. It looks like some kind of sealant film. Not clear coat. The rest of the car is single stage paint.

can you take a picture of the other side where that channel is on the roof?

i believe what u see is the adhesive tape thats left from where the painted trim peice came off

If you look at his picture you can see the area that he has polished has shine to it. The area next to the strip is still dull/oxidized but the strip still has some shine in places(clear coat). What you are seeing is the paint separating from the clear and in some places the clear flaking off.

im still thinking its the clear body tape for a trim peice ive seen the stuff before with body kits it can get nasty looking when it lifts and traps water and dirt under it

Here is the other side.

I am begining to think that a painted trim piece has fallen off.

On the right side of this picture just to the right of the light, you can see the flakes of clear coat. Look nearer to the top side of the strip where it looks a little opaque. That's the clear lifting off/failing.

take it by a body shop and ask them what it is it shouldnt take them 5 seconds to determine if its CC failing or body tape or if your brave you can try heating it with a hair drier and try to scrape it with your finger nail and see what it is if its take like i think u can get it up and polish whats under

Well if it is CC failure what do I do to fix it? The CC is not failing anywhere else. Do I cover it with a trim piece? Sand it down and reclear it?

for a true fix yes you have to reclear

but the painted strip would hide it for a few more years hopefully

i dont think it is clear coat failure though i have a friend with a 90's model integra and is has CC failure all over the place

ive seen a red prelude with paint in that condition and it didnt have CC failure

i would think there would be other places with CC failure than just those 2 channels

i cant believe it... i joined this forum to look for advice to restoring my prelude, it's a black '93. it has bad oxidation on top too :(

anyway i am totally new to this so i have to do a lot of research to figure out what on earth you all are discussing in the advice here!! but good place to start. thanks :)

I have some new pics. I removed the trim piece on the roof seam. It has some kind of plastic coating that has seperated. I plan on removing the plastic coating and repainting the trim. I am still having problems with the paint. i spent about an hour tonight trying to restore just one small section of the roof. After 3 passes using a yellow pad with IP and the PC set on 6 here is what it looked like.

Here is the trim piece.

I follower the IP up with some FP on a white pad to try to remove what I thought was hazing but it did not phase it.

Well I am wondering what to do now. Is the white I am now seeing hazing, or am I getting down to last of the oxidation? My plan is to keep using the IP with the yellow pad and try to polish out this oxidation. Am I going about this the right way?
