Can we say "whoa?"

I'm a car guy.

But I just cannot relate to these neophyte owners who think the Civic or Neon are performance cars...

But then, I've never had a taste for sushi...

(Yeah, I know this post is trite, but it is how I feel.)

The SRT-4, while still a Peeon body, is definitely engineered for performance. Coming from a car community who hates the ricer type mentality, I've grown to really respect these little 4-pots. The Mitsu 4G63 engine has a huge amount of potential.

True, but the STR-4 is a pretty bulletproof design if not severely abused. I'd prefer to see the drivetrain in a more upscale vehicle though.

Actually, the SRT doesn't use the 4G63 engine. That engine does indeed have a lot of potential, however it was used in the 'DSM' cars.

The SRT-4 has a 2.4L motor with an iron block and aluminum head. It's a refreshed version of the turbo 2.4 used in the Mexican 'cloud cars' (cirrus, stratus, etc). They added additional features such as forged internals and oil squirters and crank scrapers when putting the motor in the SRT-4 and PT Cruiser Turbo. The engine is completely of Chrysler design, and the only Mitsu part on it is the turbo itself :).

The motor is an effective and efficient power plant that can be used on multiple platforms. In it's stock form, and with proper tuning, it's capable of 450 daily-driven wheel horsepower without even cracking the motor open. Those who upgrade the internals are realizing the true potential of the motor. This year we should see some 700+HP street cars. Professional race teams (Mopar Pro Stock, RaceDeck Racing) have obtained power well north of 1000HP out of the stock block and crank.

Stay tuned for the next generation SRT-4. It won't be in a Neon body (PL body is being retired) but you should see power at or exceeding the current power levels of the current Lancer EVO VIII. While the current powertrain is nice, it is indeed a Neon. The SRT community is excited about the next generation SRT platform. It's essentially a clean slate, and we should be free of the deficiencies of the PL platform.:up
