Can this be an alternative to QD for claying

I'm not a fan of wasting my precious QD spray for claying the car. So I've come up with an idea: i've got some of that cheapy 99 cent car wash soap from wal-mart. Mix 1 part soap with, say 4 parts water. Put in a spray bottle. And use that as lubricant. Then when you're done claying the area, rinse it. No need to re-wash the car in other words, since it's already incorporated into the process.

Whadya think? :bounce

Depends upon the carwash that you use. I think it was Turtle Wax carwash that made my Mothers claybar fall apart. However, there's no problem with Zaino carwash as a lubricant, 1 capful per 16 oz. spray bottle.

Sounds like a decent idea to me. I'm sure it would offer pretty good lubrication.

Although, of course, I wouldn't count on that as a way to keep you from washing your car afterwards. You are, after all, just spraying soapy water on and wiping it off without any rinsing. I'd think that you'd end up with some residue.

Well that's what I'm saying, after I'm done claying, say the hood, I just spray it down with the hose by my side. The only thing that concerns me is, like what prowler said, the clay falling apart. I might try it with a test piece of clay.

I could keep a bucket of water by my side to dunk the clay bar in it after using it in a certain area.

Anyone do something similar to this procedure?

Hiya all, this is my first time posting...been lurking around for awhile....anyway that is how I do it when I clay. I use the Mother's Clay Bar and just put some carwash in a spray bottle and mix with water. I have used a couple different types of carwashes and have had no problems. Make sure to spray off each panel after claying though. Let me know if you need anything else.

Ohhh... you are rinsing off panels as you go.

Hell, knock yourself out. I don't see why it wouldn't work. :xyxthumbs

any reason you want to use ultra-cheap carwash instead of your regular carwash? I mean, I assume you don't use the ultra-cheap stuff regularly because you feel it has some shortcomings. So why would you want to spray it on your paint in an extra-concentrated form (4:1 dilution)? You could use your normal carwash and still save a bunch of money/QD (unless you use Pinnacle carwash and some cheapy QD or something...). :nixweiss

Its normally said that diluted car wash soap can be used as a lubricant, but I had a bad experience with marring when I did that on my TL Type-S.

I was also using Mothers clay which I dont like as much, but it was all I could get at the time. After that I had to go over my whole car with 3M SMR to get the paint flawless again.

I just bought some clay magic that I love for $10, and I will just use the lubricant spray that it comes with. Honestly its slicker than the soap, and the slicker the better for me.

After I wash the car I make up a new bucket of soapy water I put the clay in the bucket and I like rewash the car with the clay and soapy water and then rinse

It's like the Zip wash kind that you can get a gallon for 99 cents. It's not harmful at all. I have a small bottle of Mother's california gold car wash for an actual wash.

I dunno, i mean I thought all you needed was something that could be a good lubricant. I mean, I used Zymol QD the other day, and that stuff just runs out fast! I dunno where to get a good deal on QD, and I can't find mother's QD anywhere!

both claymagic and mother's come with plenty of QD/lubricant. I'm not a big fan of messing around with which soap and how much. Using the QD that comes with the clay is fine for the detailing enthusiast and I use the lube for the handful of cars I detail on the weekends.

using QD for claying isn't THAT expensive IMO since you don't do it all the time for a car.

I guess I'll give in. Oh well. Gotta try finding mother's QD. Zymol is too much money.

...also I'll leave that spray bottle with soap for the wheels. :D:D

I just clayed this weekend and used a little bit of Mothers GC in a spray bottle with water. Worked great !!!!! It actually seemed to be slicker than any type of regular QD.
