Can someone explain to me what Micromarring really is?

I ask this because i'm somewhat of a noob to polishing. I've been working with a few light polishes and pads on friends cars to get the hang of this.



Yesterday was the first time i used anything that had actual cut to it. I used HD UNO with an orange LC pad on my buddies 88 C4 vette. I made one pass on the entire hood and while it seemed to take a lot of imperfection out it did leave something on the hood that almost gave me a heart attack.



I'm not sure if this was marring or not. but it left very visable impressions on the paint where i had made the passes. almost like holograms exactly the size of the pad i used all over the hood in the direction that i made the pass. So because he was standing right in front of me i didn't panic.



I proceeded to follow the step with the UNO with Menz 203 with a white pad. And THANK GOD everything came out and was shining beautifully.



Anyway...was what i saw micromarring? and if so i guess thats normal because of the fact that HD UNO has a lot of cut with an orange pad?



Any insight is greatly appreciated.

never heard of that happening when using HD Uno. Although it is pad dependent meaning that everything you use HD Uno say on a orange pad, then you would follow up with HD on a White pad etc . . .



What you saw could have been haze but to answer your question:



Micromarring are fine scratches. Most of the time on soft paints you will get micromarring when wiping off the polish from the car and things like that.

Micro marring is the fine scratches instilled by the use of a DA polisher from the use of an aggressive of a pad or polish. Holograms are the fine scratches instilled by a rotary polisher from the use of an aggressive pad or polish.





Some paints are more prone to it than others. Not fully breaking down a polish can result in marring as well as over working a polish too.







At least that's how I use the term micro marring. ;)
 
Yeah, we're just splitting hairs with regards to words that mean "scratches".



"Marring" is an umbrella term that covers all below-surface defects. Another word would be "scratches" since everything from holograms to deep gouges is really just a variation on the "scratch" theme.



"Micromarring" is just marring that's so light as to be almost invisible to the naked eye ("micro" + "marring"). Holograms and micromarring are pretty similar and I've had micromarring that looked almost identical to a light hologram.
 
so regardless....when using an aggressive polish like UNO and an orange pad is it normal to get some Marring before doing a less aggressive polish?

Yes, which is why we always follow with a less aggressive polish, or in your case, pad. :)

funny thing is...i was so shocked when i saw all the marring i switched to a different polish with a less aggressive pad.



I went from UNO on an orange pad to Menz 203 with a white pad. Maybe it wasn't neccessary but the results were good.

Aggressive pad + polish combos tend to leave residual "marring" or scratches that look like very light and little scratches on the paint.



Looks like you have the hang of polishing from the results on that vette! :bigups

I normally used M105/M205 and if for whatever reason the particular car I'm working doesn't want to finish down without micro marring I reach for Menzerna. ;)

Looks really good. Next time try Menz 85rd with a blue pad to get that last extra pop.
