Can someone explain this to me please?

Awhile ago I was talking to Sal Zaino on the phone, discussing why Zaino doesn't last on my paint. He told me to use 3M Swirl Mark Remover part #39009 on my car, then Z5/ZFX directly over it. I did that, and it seemed to last longer, but that's besides the point. Every time 3M SMR is mentioned on here, everyone says it contains oils and fillers in it, and that Zaino won't bond to it. Sal told me to get the 3M stuff instead of Meguiar's because he said it contains no oils or anything that would stop Zaino from bonding. Can someone please explain if this is true or not?

Thanks,

Matt

That's very interesting stuff. I was always under the impression that 3M SMR did have oils and fillers in it. It seemd that way to me after using it. I always conisdered the product to be more of a glaze like IHG, then an actual abrasive SMR. Who knows anymore?

So with #39009 the proceedure is

A) Wash

B) #39009

C) Z5 w/ ZFX

Interesting .. because I have #39009 and I used it and it does have fillers, the I/A / Water wipe showed that .. but maybe it doesn't have oils.. Is it water based?

You can't apply Zaino over 3M without first washing the car to remove the oils and fillers.

Perhaps you misunderstood Sal?

This can be a problem with some 3M products. You can get a good finished product but when you come back a day or two later imperfections begin to emerge as the fillers migrate away.
