Can modern coatings replace the UV coating on headlights?

Hello folks,

I`m deciding whether I should get a protective film applied to my headlights to prevent accumulation of rock chips and other hits. The other option is that I just leave them alone, and if it gets too bad, to polish them. However, I am worried that I would take off the UV protective layer, which means that they will turn yellow / frosty over time. On my old car, I had one headlight that I would sand and polish and polymer seal. Initially it was clear, but over time, it would turn yellowed and frosty again. Are the modern ceramic or other polymer sealants good enough to act as a long term protective layer?
 
I’d say go with the protective film. I did on mine and do not regret it almost 3 years later.

Xpel and 3M are great. You can diy these with some patience and a heat gun they come pre cut for your vehicle.
 
Will polishing headlights really remove uv protectors and cause the headlights to yellow faster from then on (leaving Headlight coating maintenance aside)?
 
Get a Film put on.

Absolutely necessary if you don`t want your headlights to Yellow.

I`ve had Xpel on my Lexus for 17 years.

Headlights have not Yellowed nor has the film been treated with anything!

+1 with Marine Clerk ----

Have had a clearbra with all front lights covered for 9 years now on the Grand Cherokee, and none of the lights and fog lights are even close to yellow.. The extra thickness of the material for the lights helps give them a little more impact protection too..
