Can anything be done to reduce the PCs vibrations

I dont have the handle that came with the PC (lost it :nixweiss anyone got an extra?) and it is vibrating the hell out of me. Nothing near as smoothe as the rotary, anytips for making it so it doenst vibe my body so bad?

I always thought the PC vibrated MORE with the handle because it acts like a tuning fork... I use mine without the handle now.

It's always going to vibrate due to it's random orbit action. I've heard that changing the counterweight to a 6" one can help, but I haven't tried this yet.

I have been thinking about cutting down a bicycle grip and fabricating a bracket that would screw into both sides of my PC. I'll try and post back with progress in a week or so.

What size plate you got on there? And what counter-weight do you have too?

I actually find that it vibrates less without the handle as long as you put one hand on the "head".

Yeah, forget the handle, use a 6" counterweight, and use as small a pad/backing plate combo as you can.

If you're gonna use the "regular" 6-6.5" pads, I'd recommend the "flex" plate. It seems to run smoother with that combo (6" weight/flex plate) than with other combos. But it works the *smoothest* with the 6" weight, a small flex plate, and 4" pads.

If it still bugs you, get some vibration-reducing work gloves.

There are no real fixes for the vibration other than:

1) Switching to a rotary

2) Turning it to "off"

Try to hold onto the machine with only as much muscle as it takes to perform the task. Dont lock your arms and relax your shoulders.

I have run an 80 pound jackhammer for 4 or 5 hours many times, and keeping tension out of your shoulders and arms and allowing your boddy to jiggle with the machine, prolongs how long you can use it.

When i am laying brick and block, my arms are relaxed and almost limp.

I dont have a whole lot of machine experience, but i have come along way just monitoring how i am holding the machine. At frst i was suprized how much it vibrated, especially on 6, but now i just go with the flow.

It will put its toll on your body after so many hours, but there are techniques to maximize your duration.

Accumulator makes a good point.

When I use 4" spot pads and the 5" counterweight that came with the 7424, it runs very smooth and much more tolerable than the 6" pad/6" counterweight combo. It's very nice to use, even on speed 6!

Wow great advice everyone thanks for the responses. I hae the factory backing plate that came with it. Been meaning to get a flex plate. And I read that the 5 and 6 inch counter weight is just a myth. There is a really good thread over at the Meguiars forums on it.

Dang jackhammer for 5 hours, that is why that is meant for men, not 5'3" women.

 San Diego, I hate you :p

Try wearing your winter gloves, they should help dampen the vibrations.

PS don't hate me too:) I just moved from Pittsburgh, I think they had snow last week or the week before:shocked

I totally agree.

It is a myth that you need a counterweight with the PC. Call a Porter Cable rep and ask them.

Detailgirl, sell the PC and put some money to it and buy a Cyclo. You can use it all day and have no ill effects from the vibration. I could not use the PC for more than a few minutes on 5 or 6. I always had to use it on 4 for a comfortable experience but then it was pretty much useless.

Not sure about the counterweight because I haven't done any kind of comparison testing, but using a lighter pad and plate DID make a big difference for me.

I get noticeably less vibration with my lighter flex plate and 6" pads. For this reason I no longer use my larger DAS pads as the vibration becomes intolerable after a while at speed 6. I get even less vibration with the 4 inch spot pads.
