Can a 3 inch backing plate be placed and used on a 5-6 inch da?

I have a 3D/HD polisher model j0568 and was wondering if I can effectively use a 3 inch backing plate and pads on it.

" Spindle Thread: 5/16” for the 3D/HD polisher model J0568 PC, By looking at the thread size you should be able to use a 3" BP with the right pads for it.

you refer to the J0568 model? when talking about HD Polisher
 
This is the model number on the instruction sheet and has the words 3D international so I am sure it is a rebranded.
