Calling pros that use Dewalt dw849

I don't use any of those pads.

I use 05737, which is a foam cutting

Then use 05738 which is foam polishing.

Both pads are waffle design pads.

I use them with no adaptors or attachements. They work just fine with a Meguiars backing plate.

For Wool, I use a 100% Real Lambswool Leather Backed pads from AutoInt. They are the only suppliers I know of that carry a real Lamswool pad.

FinishKare has the same pads as Autoint and the pads are manufactured for both companies by Buff and Shine Industires.

Ok you just need to know what to buy to get started correct?

Backing plate 3M part# 05717

Compounding pad 3M part# 05727

Polishing pad 3M part# 05738

I am trying to get started. I recently posted and said I am in the process of buying ALL new equipment. Everything from MF towels to polishes and a rotary buffer. I recently purchased MF towels, wheel scrubber, tire scrubber, and spoke scrubber pole from CMA. Also, detailing totes and bins as well. I did this based upon the information and knowledge the autopians provided. I was very pleased and could not have been happier with the results. The same has now been said for the makita buffer. I was going with the dewalt, but since all the great information, I changed my mind and did a little research myself as you can see. Which has been most of this discussion. I originally posted about getting the right backing plate and adaptor. So that is exactly where I am now. Where I started to begin with. LOL

Yes, Andre; I am just trying to get started. I would really appreciate it if you could watch the 3M professional detailing video so that you understand what pads I want and why, because it seem I am confusing everyone.

Go here and choose professional detailing system. Then once the movie starts move the cursor at half mark and it will shortly play the section i am referring to.

5725, 5703, 5704, 5705, 5723 these are the NEW 3M pads and the ones in the video, and I just need to make sure to get the correct backing plate and adaptor.

Here is a link to the backing plates and I believe I need to pick one or two things from there.

Here is both links to the compounding pads and polishing pads that I mentioned above ( 5725 etc. )

I hope this clears any confusion up on the subject about what I need for 3M backing plates and possible adaptor.

The velcro backing pad I heard is a nono. I heard it can not be perfectly centered like custom backing plates and it will vibrate. That could cause swirls and scuffs. That is what I am hearing.

If there is another pad the makita comes with, I have no idea if it is compatible with the pads I am talking about from 3M.

Not flaming but, I think you should try some of these things for yourself instead of relying exclusively on everyones opinions. You should just buy your polisher, some compounds etc., get the 3M pads suggested above, and work on some practice panels.

Lets say that you buy the 3M pads that Andre' suggested, try them out with the Makita velcro pad, and they don't vibrate. You would have saved $20, and if it does vibrate, just buy the 3M backing pad like you wanted to. You are no worse off that way.

I am assuming that the other pad the makita comes with is a rubber backing pad with a center nut to hold the pads in place. This one is compatable with almost every buffing pad available for a rotary.

This info will be so much easier to figure out if you had the items in front of you. I can't say that I know if vibration causes swirls, but you should question the source of this info.

Take some risks! You can't get into this thing and not expect to make errors. It's the mistakes that provide lifes greatest lessons.

The rubber backing plate that comes with rotary will not work with any hook and loop pad. If your rotary comes with a velcro backing plate it may work with the 3M pads.

I am glad Andre cleared that up for me. That is why I must rely on many opinions and follow the ones that are most consistant. Nagchampa, did you happen to view my previous post in regards to Andre the one with all the links? If you view those and such you might be at a better position to guide me. So I might not be able to use either pad that comes with the Makita.? Andre, showroom, Nagchampa, if you could please view my last post with all the links, I bet you could end this dragging thread. lol

Thanks again for all the wonderful time and patience.

Actually I just looked at my velcro pads and I don't see how they wouldn't work with the standard rubber backing pads. They have a hole cut out in the centre of them as well as a recess for the nut to rest on (foam is cut but not removed). I have yet to see a pad without this hole and recess on it. Look at a standard pad and look at a velcro pad and you will see what I mean. I guess I will have to post pictures or something.

I looked at your post with the links, the pads cost twice as much, but I do not see any true advantage other than the mounting system. I have not used them so I would again advise you to talk to someone who has. Ask them if the increase in cost is worth the results.

There are many pro detailers here that use a velcro mounting system and I don't recall any complaints about vibration. Again I am not knocking 3M but the superbuff system sounds like it solves a mounting problem that doesn't really exist.

Just find velcro mount 3M pads and then take it from there. I looked at the ones in your post, then I looked at the ones Andre' suggested. Go with Andre's choice! He knows a lot more than me! I have only owned a buffer for a couple of months now so I am still learning just like you.

The Makita 9227c comes with a velcro backing plate, not a rubber backing plate. It is designed for the 8" pads. It does not vibrate and the pads stick really well, almost too well as they are hard to get off.

Bud, you really need to just get the equipment and try for yourself. Otherwise, you are just seeking answers to hypothetical questions. No flaming intended! :) When you have a problem, these guys really know their stuff!!

I have been helped a great deal by these guys and you will be too! As such, since I have a great deal of audio experience, I will help anyone that needs it.

Good Luck!

Very patient person. I could not have learned so much about the 3M stuff without him.

In case this ever comes up again.

The 5725,5723,5703,5704,5705 are good pads.

Some REQUIRE the adaptor.

The double sided wool pads require it.

The foam pads require the backing plate, and are velcro as is.

I believe the double backed wool pads are for the use only with the adaptor and not the backing plate.

For the foam I am going to have to take off the whool pad and attach the backing plate and then the foam pad.

This was not an easy task to figure out these things. I think I got it right this time. Took Andre' a lot of time to help me. Good guy he is though. I believe I got it right.

Ordering the Makita 9227 and 5718 backing plate and 5710 adaptor.

Thank you again Andre and all who were patient.
