Which pads do you think Kevin is referring to in his post that might be good to use with the 3401?
Not referring to any particular pad!
I was just theorizing- I have not magnified any of the pads you mentioned, so I can't tell you how they compare to another pad.
As an example... I do know some guys really like using a Meguiar's W7207 Soft Buff Cutting pad with their random orbital or rotary buffer, but other guys find that the W8207 Soft Buff Polishing pad works better for them.
Same compounds, same county (therefore the same environment), so those variables are not an issue. What IS an issue is how much pressure each guy uses, the amount of liquid they apply, how long they buff before cleaning the pad or reapplying product, and on and on and on.
That being said, I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the pads mentioned. If I was setting you up, I would tell you to spend a few bucks and buy a variety of pads. Talk to one of the guys at PAC- I think you will be happy with what they recommend!
I tend to use smaller diameter pads, but sometimes a larger pad works wonders. There are plusses and minuses to EVERY foam pad. The key is to learn all you can about the ones you try. Trust me- you may spend a few bucks more than you want to, but if there is ONE thing you can never have enough of.... it is a variety of pads!
If I were you, I would get a cutting, a polishing, and a finishing pad (closed cell and open, one of each type), in the same brand so you aren't making too much of a jump from the cutting to the polishing to the finishing.
Get a small diameter pad set (6" or less). And since I am a loyalist, get the Meguiar's trio of Soft Buff 2.0 pads. They are large by todays standards (7"), but they are definitely high caliber products.
