Calling all auto paint pros (problems with my repaint)

Its PPG paint.

I'm not paint expert, but this thread is helping me feel somewhat validated that last year I insisted the shop use Sikkens paint instead of their standard PPG on my dark red metallic. Those were the only 2 options they had.

Brand of paint doesn't make a difference on the problem you have Brandon. Your problem is called tiger striping and is caused by improper spray technique.

One more thing, speaking of blotches in paint. Has anyone looked at the new Chevrolet Avalanche that is sort of a sand color? It is blotchy all over. I looked at the dealership yesterday when I was in town and the new paintjobs are awful. I haven't seen orange peel this bad on a factory paintjob until now.

I've seen enough of the new full sized GM SUVs and trucks to know that is a very common problem. Just unreal they would do such a good job on the redesign and then do such a crappy job painting them.

I recommended to a couple of customers, since their SUVs were built here in Arlington, I'd be willing to go to them to the factory and back them up if they want to express their displeasure at the crappy paint. I hope someone takes me up on that offer because the level of orange peel is outrageous.

Interesting thread...I have the same problem on the Blazer's (repainted) hood.

Oh, and blending pearls/candies is *possible*, but like a lot of things- good luck being the guy who gets it done to his satisfaction.

going by what I read it sounds like your paint job (leopard skin pants) has a uneven metallic finish (mottle) not tiger stripes a mottled paint job looks like a cloudy day with a chance of rain:chuckle: and a tiger stripe paint job looks like it sounds stripes threw your paint job I believe your truck was hit in the rear and unless your a really bad painter it's hard to get tiger stripes on the bed panels it's typically found on top surfaces so my conclusion is mottle

:bow from experience I've found that PPG (piss poor gloss) the globall line had a mottle problem their paint line is old school old technology I was using PPG for little over a year and hated everyday of it I didn't understand why we were shooting PPG I work for a Toyota and BWM dealership 80% of our work is BMW which is german so we finally switched to Glasurit (BASF) paint because we are BMW certified repair facility and they require Glasurit paint on their cars for warranty claims IMO is much better than PPG no mottle problems superb color matches plus I was familiar with BASF paint I shot Diamont for 9 years and liked that paint also :D

Well, its going back next week, and he says he can get it right. I told him about PPG and he said he was worried about it not matching colors perfectly. I trust his opinion, i've known this guy literally all my life and seen alot of his work and refered more than 15 customers to him to their full satisfaction. I guss this job was performed on an off day. Good thing he is being so cooperative about fixing it.

Blown I was just giving him a little resurance that it wasn't the paint, didn't want to give a lesson on painting because this is a detail forum.
