California Duster BETTER with age?

I'm sure folks here have used the California Duster. The makers claim it works better the more you use it. How is that? You would think that it would be more likely to scratch your car as it picks up more and more dust.

I have never had a problem with mine and its like 2 1/2 years old. It tends to get dirty and I clean it per the instructions.

How do you clean yours, I don't recall seeing any cleaning instructions with mine. It just said to wrap it in newspaper if it was leaving streaks.

Thanks,

One of mine is about 14 years old, never been cleaned other than banging it on the side of a trash can. Still works great. Not being very inquisitive, I never wondered why, just used it.

Thanks,
I believe cleaning instructions say to wash the mop head in something mild like Woolite.

That's only if it's totally necessary. Like if you got some nasty goop on it accidentally.

They actually recco not washing it at all because you'll end up removing the paraffin coating from the fibres. The paraffin is what grabs the dust.

Woolite is probably a very mild soap, that's why they are recco'ing it if necessary.

So, indeed, the California Duster really DOES get better with use (though nobody knows exactly why). Has anybody ever encountered even the slightest micro-fine scratches from using it? That is, assuming it was used according to instructions...

They seem to take a week or so to really work well, then after that, performance seems constant. I just bang the dust out of mine every so often.

I've had no problems with my "plastic handle" version. I've had it for about 2 years and it works extremely well. I just shake it out before and after I use it everytime.

i bought a california car duster the other day , it's a wood stem version and does not have any of the oil like sap on the duster like some people are saying. Did i get the wrong duster ?

No you got the right one. Just make sure that you lay it on some newspaper for like 2 days prior to using it. The strands are treated with a parrifin (sp?) wax I believe. The newpaper will get all the excess off before use.

my strands are not coasted with anything it feels like regular cloth. Couldi of gotten a older version ?

Scuzy, it may not seem like there's anything on it, but if you wrap it in newspaper for a day or two you should see some residue left on the paper.

While there are some minor differences in the yarn, both versions seem to work quite well. If you are happy with the results, just use it and enjoy those results.

It's perfectly normal. The strands feel dry and you can't rub anything off by hand, but it's there. You can probably smell the funky waxy coating, but that's it. As said, let it sit (or wrap it) in newspaper and you'll erase your doubts in no time. :up

hmm maybe i should wrap it in newspaper then. I already ran it across my car nad i didn't notice any streaks.
