My neighbors cadillac has really dirty break dust that has been sitting for awhile in the cracks....

There is a picture of the rims, I tried many products and couldnt really get it off and I was using every tool possible, tool brush and everything.

I got alot of it out except on the really far back of the rims in the little cracks.

Here is my question...Will wheel acid get it off? Also where can I find some wheel acid?

Or if not what are yalls opinions?

Thanks,
Blake

What products have you already tried? Did you try using clay or AIO? I would also give Poorboy's Spray 'n Rinse or Meguiar's Wheel Brightener a shot.

I tried simple green and a bunch of different wheel cleaners that my neighbor had, I got the majority off but I need something that is basically going to eat it off because I cant get any tools back there to scrub it really well.

You should be careful on what you use because of the chrome. I don't think it would take much to damage it. I don't know of the affects of wheel acid on chrome but you won't see me trying it. Meguairs has a new chrome wheel cleaner and all wheel cleaner that can be picked up at any auto store so you may want to give that a try. Try a chrome polish or poorboys Pro Polish when they are dried and see how that goes. Theres a point where you can't get anymore brake dust off and will have to live with it to save yourself from trying to hard and maybe hurting the wheel.

imo, if you do get all the brake dust and beleive me it will take a lot of scrubbing and elbow grease their will be etching left behind where the break dust dwelled for a long period of time. If you take the time to do the work the owner will have to consistently(weekly cleaning and wheelwax) use a wheelwax/spraywax to keep the break dust from building up on the etched part of the wheels..

Short of removing the rim are you are not going to be able to get the dust out of the back of the rim.....those are really tight.....A acid based cleaner might take it off but that some nasty stuff to work with and can stain the rims....My guess would be to use the wheel cleaners you have and try some 000 or 0000 steel wool this will not harm the chrome....in-part Joe is right even if you do get this stuff off, the chrome under it might not be good or eaten threw....that's the price they are paying for not keeping up with the rims along

I definitely wouldn't use wheel acid on those, honestly. If the polish these other folks recommended doesn't do the trick, try some #0000 steel wool.

My local chemical supplier and I had a discussion about wheel acid. I take every chance I get to go to the warehouse and product "lab" and talk to the chemist. She convinced me to give the acid a shot but only on chrome. I rarely use it except on really nasty chrome and chrome wire wheels. But it does the trick like nothing else I have tried. However I kept the stuff I have in a spray bottle with a chemical resistant spray head and well the original spray head does not work any longer. So if you do go down the acid route wear solvent resistant gloves your hands will thank you.

Wheel acid and a long brush should do the trick. Don't listen to the ones telling you not to use it. Yes it can cause damage over long-term use. Using it every now and then to get rid of built up crud will cause no damage. Just make sure its diluted right and it does not dry on the wheel.

If you really want to get them clean and make them easier to car for. Take the wheels off clean them, clay them, polish and seal them.

Oh yeah. Woo go me 500th post. :band:

Thanks for the replies guys...where can I pick up wheel acid?

They dont even drive this car much so the build up of break dust shouldnt be a big problem.

Have any of you every tried Scrubbing Bubbles on chrome wheels. A co-worker swears it is great on chrome wheels. I haven't tried it, but am tempted after all it claims to clean bathroom faucets that are chrome. My co-workers wheels always look great.

He has warned me not to get it on paint.

Im sure they have it at walmart or something, ill try it out I guess.

But really the hardest part is getting some sort of tool in there...

The spaces in the rim is just too small to get a tool so you need something that will eat it up really well.

Your best option will probably be to take the wheel off if you want to get to all the little crevices and such.

If the wheel has been neglected for some time imho scrubbing bubbles wont cut the dust. You can try it and then let us know your results.I'm trying to save time scrubbing bubbles might work for maintained wheels but surely not baked on brake dust..

Yeah tomorrow Ill try to get some pictures of the rims themselves to show yall the idea, but it looks great if your not like right up on them.

Meguiar's All Wheel Cleaner, Or Meguiar's Chrome Wheel Cleaner. With some minor agitation, took all the stains off my wheels...
