Cabin Filters...funky smells, etc

Not sure if this actually falls under detailing or not, but my buddy started using his heat for the winter in his 03 altima and it smells RANK as hell, well i knew right away...cabin filter. lol So i got him over here today, popped the cover off, and sure enough, i could barely stand to keep my nose near it, there was prolly 6 feet of leaves and other nasty xxxx that i need not mention piled on top of that filter. After vacuuming the vent out and getting as much as i could clean, i put the new filter in, however its still smellin pretty bad.

Will this clear up over time now that the new filter is in? or should i run some febreeze through the vents?
 
Just a guess, but my thoughts are that if the smells weren't resolved with the new cabin filter, your friend likely has some mold/mildew issues in the ductwork. FeBreeze may or may not resolve the issue. It is cheap enough to try before moving on to a product that will handle mold and mildew.
 
AG sells a special thing for it.
Supposed to do a great job. Spray it in duct work.
Not sure what it's called, look for it.
 
The most important aspect of removing (as opposed to using a product that will cover it, only for the dour to return later on) or at the very least mitigating an offensive door is that you must find and remove its origin. If you thoroughly clean the interior and it still smells you have not removed the material which is generating the smell. You can use an ozone machine, steam / extractor, scrub, and vacuum etc but if you do not remove the origin the smell will remain.

Always check the following; cabin air filter, a/c condensate pan and drain pipe smells and odours ( use 1z Klima-Cleaner Air Conditioning Cleaner- it’s an effective means for removing odour-causing bacteria, fungi and other germs)
