Buying Used Car

Alright well out of no where I decided maybe it is time for a different car. I did this last year with my Firebird and it sold in a week...So I cancelled my order on the new hood and I started looking at cars. Im looking to spend $10,500 or less under 100k miles. Any suggestions as to what I should get? Or should I just keep the GTP? I dont want something expensive to fix like an older bmw or nething...Something practical for someone at 18 to fall in love with :)

*Thanks Danase, this reminded me I usually only drive my cars in the summer and I have a winter beater...so I dunno if this will change ne of the responses*

Any good cars for sale websites other than the usuals:

You are going to get a million suggestions so here is mine.

Get something AWD. I have had RWD, FWD and now that I have an AWD car I won't go back to a daily driver that is not AWD especially in Michigan.

I usually prefer automatics but man... :sadpace: isnt this nice

Whatever you get- I suggest you take it to your house and HAND WASH IT before signing anything on it. It still amazes me what a dirty car and five feet rule can hide!

Went to car dealership today...Found a 2003 Eclipse GT Charcoal Gray for $13k...I'll keep you updated :) Going to test drive Monday

weren't/aren't mitsubishi's unreliable...if reliability is a major concern, I'd check the consumer reports used car report. they usually break down the cars by model and year

Subie, or AWD, even for Summer duty! :) I have a blast in mine when a bunch of us head out to Hell, MI and cruise around in the spring, summer, and fall.

Well after the much needed input on the Eclipse I read through some consumer reports and it made me think twice about what I was getting into. For the price to miles ratio it just wasnt where I wanted to go to buy a vehicle that will last. I am currently looking into VW Passats the GLS V6 with awd....Tomorrow after school I am going down to the credit union to talk with my loan advisor anyone know how these insurance rates would compare to my current Grand Prix GTP in general?? Higher or lower.. or should I go with the 1.8 4 cyl. with tiptronic? the car is a 2002 which was rated one of the safest cars for the year. Thanks for the help.

VW was just on the worst reliability list that came out from Consumer Reports last week. But, like you said, they are safe. I am glad you decided against the Eclipse, those things seem to break down left and right. Insurance might be a little cheaper since the car is as safe as it is.

Well, I love my Chrysler so my recommendation is admittedly biased. The best deal I've seen in that price range lately is a 2001 Chrysler 300M priced at $11,950. They're a luxury/performance car that's wonderful to drive. They're rated very well by Consumer Reports, especially the 2001 models. Like many other Chrysler products, they didn't hold their value well, which works in your favor when you're buying a used car. Some folks think the 2001 models are the ones to have because, in addition to the highest CR reliability ratings, Daimler Chrysler was adding content to the cars up to that year, then started decontenting some features bit by bit. You ought to at least try one out, it has plenty of power and handles very well. I bought a very similar model, the 2001 LHS. I drove many cars and consider the 300M and LHS to be the nicest driving cars I found for anything remotely close to the price, including Caddy, Lexus and a wide variety of other models, big and small. If you want something even more performance-oriented, look into a 2002-04 300M Special with lower rear-end gear ratio, lowered and with suspension tweaks, ground effects, etc.

This particular one is owned by a real enthusiast who took excellent care of it and lots of nice mods. And no, it's obviously not local for you, but I'm throwing it out there as food for thought. He has an ad for it posted at http://www.300mclub.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10158 and many pictures of it at http://community.webshots.com/user/bigred300m-reg

In this pic it's the red car on the left. The BMW 7-series on the right is the one he just bought to replace it.
