Do alot of research on any stocks before spending your hard earn money. Take a look at Mutual funds also. Try talking to a manager that work's in these area's and read up on Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine.

stock market nowadays is like a casino. Here are some tips I've come to live by

If you are buying in an rrsp, then buy safe stocks that pay dividends (hopefully they have a DRIP program too). Yields of 4-5% are good but make sure it is a large, stable company (banks etc).

outside of an RRSP, forget buy and hold, get in, make money, then get out...

if you ever make money on a penny stock then consider yourself lucky and never buy it back once it goes down...and it will go down...

You should invest in oil, with raising gas prices going sky high, I'm sure you'll make some kind of money:D

EDIT: might want to check out gold too, gold is supposed to be going up

Dividends are your friend and make sure you reinvest those dividends. Look at high quality stocks and stay away from scary high dividends - usually a sign a company wont be able to play. Try to diversify as well, spreading the money into 5 different sectors. Some of my favorite dividend plays are Annaly Capital (NLY), AT&T (T), Kinder Morgan (KMP), GE (GE). I learned a lot by watching CNBC, learning about dividends, diversifying, etc. You can also check out Motley Fool, thestreet.com, etc. I would choose the sectors you want to buy into and then find the best of breed stock in those sectors.
