where's a good place to purchase a safety razor OTC?

I looked all over and couldn't find anything OTC, but Amazon has them with freeship. There is tons of info about using them online. I got a Parker, but Merkur is a nice brand too. I am using the Shark brand blades, they last forever and are dirt cheap.

Yep, I have heard that name mentioned. Watch out though, this can turn into the same thing as detailing, you can't try just one brand....lol.

Tell me about it. I have probably a dozen shave soaps and 10 or so shave creams, 6 brushes, 4 razors.. a zillion blades. Pre shave oils, after shave treatments, etc. Some of that stuff is expensive. (well a LOT of it is, my most expensive brush was about $160 and that's still considered "Cheap")

I found all of my DE shaving stuff OTC. My Gillette Super Speed is from my grandfather, he used it in the Sixtes. I started with a VDH kit from Rite Aid that included a brush, bowl, and soap. The brush is not that great but its fine for a beginner. The brush has been replaced with a Silvertip Badger brush from ebay. I purchase all of my soaps and creams locally. I use Speick, Kiss my Face, VDH, The Real Shaving CO, Cg Bigelow, and Kiehls. My main stores are Whole Foods, Rite Aid, and Bath and Body Works.

You are right although Merkur is one of the famous DE there is in the market,

Edwin Jagger, Joris, Muhle, Parker can't be left behind.

Weishi is the most affordable safety razor, I tell you. It is like$18.50 only.

It is made in China.

Check out the link below to see what Weishi looks like. If you are new at wet shaving, this is just right for you.

Double-Edge Safety Razors

So for those that have used a variety of DE's, what all does going to a more expensive one get you? I have a Parker right now.

I use and love my Merkur HD long handle with Israel Persona blades. I bought 400 blades of ebay for $40 dollars a year ago, I still have over 300 blades easy. I won't need blades for another lets say 3 years.

Here's my set up

I bought my brush (Vulfix super badger), bowl, shaving cream (Taylor of Old Bond Street) , and stand from vintagebladesllc.com.

Im also on the Straight Razors and Double Edge razor train. Love my old school shaves, and Im savin a crapload a money instead of buying the crap foam in a can. Plus my sensitive skin does much better.:woohoo:

I'm the only one that likes an electric shaver I guess ? I had an awesome wet / dry Panasonic for years, now I have a Braun.

thanks for the responses. i just purchased a safety razor and i don't know why i didn't pick one up alot sooner (i remember my dad had the DE blades in the bathroom closet when i was little but didn't know what they were for). i have a feeling i'm going to pick up a few other i've been looking at and hopefully it doesn't get addicting buying them like detailing products LOL. much more satisfying shave and alot cheaper as well (buy the safety razor once and just keep buying the blades in packs which run around $.50 each). next is to get a brush, stand and shaving cream (using up all the edge gel i have and will not buy it again). all the gillette fusion (refills alone cost around $13 which is ridiculous and i can't count how much $'s i wasted on them), and other disposable razors are going into the trash now...

going to get this next... :D
