buying Razors.......***!!!

I have come to the same conclusion Akronsi, the reason the Mach 3's cost so much is simply they give the best shave out there. They literaly have us by the short hairs.... The turbo version really seems to work, I use it. It's tough though with the larger blades to get the area under my nose, I bet im not the only one with that problem.

Just reading the description of that razor I was turned off, non pivoting head? Must make repeated passes? Likely more cuts and irritation, that was what my dad had to put up with. While im a gadget guy and was ready to take the leap, I just dont see that as progress. I hate shaving, more time spent doing it just doesn't seem like a good idea.

I think you are missing the point.. this isn't progression, and it *is* what your dad and granddad probably used back in the day.

The newest razors are all about convenience and ease of use.. it fits in well w/ the busy lifestyle of todays ppl.

The problem is, you pay for this! The old way is cheaper once you factor in the cost of blades. Some even say they get a closer shave w/ the double-edge safety razor.

Is this for ppl who want to rush through the shaving process? No. This razor takes a bit of practice (from what I have read).. What some ppl have left behind, others have adopted and found it better fits their lifestyle.. both in money saved and comfort.

its gonna take me a year or maybe two to get the savings with those prices for a simple blade holder. I just cant justify that price for basically something that should sell for 10 bucks tops?

Maybe someday.... someone will buy me one and I shall see

I use the Schick Quattro and the blades are still expensive but it really is a nice razor. I have tried the mach 3 turbo and the m3 power which is the one that vibrates. I like the Quattro over both but they are all nice razors.

Shoot man, I grew up using those double edged razors. They used to cost a couple bucks; and now $60???? It wasn't hard to abandon them for the newer cartridges and disposables, but I guess everything old is new again, huh?

For the blades, you were supposed to use one side the first week, then the other, then open the razor and turn the blade upside down to get another 2 weeks out of it.

In older homes there is a slot in the back of the medicine cabinet. That is for disposal of old blades. They drop down into a hole in the space-time continuum.

You can get them for much cheaper.. the $60 buys you the best double-edge razor imported directly from Germany. Merkur sells another razor for half the price of that one.. and I am sure if you buy some domestic product you could get it for under $10.

Merkur sells a Mach 3 handle for $65!! So you can tell you will pay some extra money for the name and quality.

Thing is, the shaves I get today are MUCH less painful than the ones I got with the old safety razors, and smooth enough that I'm not thinking of going back.

It's nostalia for an earlier time, maybe. Back then the nostalgia was for a folding razor, strop, and foam with brush.

The only blades today that I simply can't use are the cheap disposeables. Those suck. Otherwise, I'll pay whatever I have to for my Mach 3s. I did get suckered into the battery one, it's a waste of $$ you can safely skip it. All it does is puts your fingers to sleep as you shave.

Tom

I have removed a lot of old bathroom vanity mirrors in my day and in one property I owned there must have been a thousand old blades just stacked up in between the studs.

I havent a clue why anyone would think that was a good idea, why not just throw them out?

My aunt works for Schick. She fave me a double-edged disposable razor once, and said that it gives the closet shave of any razor. I am not sure how reliable her information is -- she's an accountant -- but that she said.

The shave was great. It did seem significantly closer than a shave with regular razor. Shaving took longer, though, becuase the blade doesn't pivot. In order to get the close shave the blade must be at the correct angle, and this means you must move the whole razor. If you get the angle wrong, it will still shave but the result will be much worse than the result from a pivoting head.

So the quality did seem higher, but the shave took much longer. The one good point is that hard-to-shave areas like sideburns, right under your nose, etc. are no trouble at all.

I think Schick still sells this razor, but the blades, etc. are very hard to find.

One thing that my aunt's husband told me about, but I never tried, was using surgical blades in your safety razor. Schick makes blades for hospitals that are much sharper than normal blades, and they fit right into a normal safety razor like the one you can buy for your home. You might be able to get them at a medical supply store or something.

I use a Gilette Mach 3 power now (I sowerfully confessed this to my aunt one time, but she forgave me and said she didn't care) but this thread has inspired me to give a safety razor another try. I will also call some of the surgical supply stores in my area and see whether they have those blades and will report back on prices, etc.

Go here for Mach3 refills:

Shavethis.com

They had a sale a while back and I got a 20 pack of refills for $13. And they always do free shipping. I haven't found the 20 pack in awhile, but they still end up being quite cheaper than retail!

Shaving after a shower or by washing the face with warm to hot water can make a huge difference in the process. I find a shaving gel works best for me but whatever you use give it a short time to dwell before using any blade.

Figured I would throw this in since this is a post on razors. This Sunday's paper has a coupon for 4 free Mach 3 Turbo blades with the purchase of one of the new Mach 3 Nitro Razor (about $9) If you have a Walgreens close by take the coupon there, they also have a deal in their circular where you get 4 free blades with the same purchase. With both Coupons you get the razor and 8 blades for around $9.

The only difference with the Nitro Razor that I can see is the color, otherwise its the same as a mach 3 turbo

I think the razor comes with one blade as well, credit slickdeals.net for the info

I made an error in that post, its the M3 Power, not the turbo. All the other details are right.

I picked up 18 M3 Paoer blades and 2 razors for 18 bucks, pretty good deal by my math (each razor comes with one blade + the 2 packs of 4 blades

bump as for some reason i couldn't start a new thread on this...

* i've used an electric razor and prefer the closeness of a razor shave, and would rather use disposable razors as the refills are too much these days*

i've tried these and while they are okay, is there anything else that is better that you've tried?

bic flex 4 (they come in a 3pk and are around $5-$6)

I gave up on the store razors. Safety Razor + DE blades = win. Blades are like 10c each.

Yep, I just got a safety razor, definitely dig it, though I can't say I can get super close with it yet.
