Buying a new vehicle soon

I find myself in a situation where I need to buy a second (used) vehicle very soon (4-5 days).

Here are my thoughts, I can either:

1.) Spend more (aka Go to a dealer) and buy what I really want

or..

2.) Buy something that can be easily re-sold and just live with it until I find something better.

Which do you think is the better option?

vt92- I can go either way (and frequently do!), and IMO you can't always *know* for certain which path is gonna work best for you.

If you buy something you *really* want, will it be a disappointment? My Mallett 'vette was a dream come true...that I simply never drove and don't miss at all.

If you buy something as a stopgap measure, might you decide it's much better than you ever expected? Many of my "just for now.." beaters end up like that.

IME the quick turnover idea is unlikely to work out well cost-wise; one big repair bill and there goes the recoup, let alone any profit.

I'm assuming that either option is OK for you financially...I for one will *NEVER* borrow money, let alone for a car, but that's just me and I understand that most people aren't like that.

vt92- Glad to hear that :xyxthumbs

Looks like you might be able to find rust-free examples, given your location. That oughta help a little.

FWIW, I never buy anything unless I truly like it, at least on some level; I don't try to talk myself into something I don't want. And I simply don't buy anything I consider, uhm.. ugly ("ugly" can mean different things in different contexts).

Your accelerated timeframe might make it tough to do this just right

I've done the "settled with car" before, a 1991 Acura Legend LS that I bought for $4000 with 40K miles. I drove that car for 2 years so that I could put money away to purchase the car that I really want. I have since made that purchase and still have the Acura which i will try to sell this spring and recoup most of my original cost since the car is basically fully depreciated. It wasn't much fun at the time and I was constantly on car forums drooling over what I wanted, but it also allowed my other car to depreciate a little bit and I was able to get more car for my money when i finally did purchase. It also removed the feeling of HAVING to get a car and maybe making the wrong decision.

The last little bonus was when my sister had car troubles and was stuck without a car for 2 weeks. I was able to lend her a car since i had 4 (:)) and it was very helpful at the time.

I wouldn't buy new or used unless I found just what I wanted ..... whether it is 5 days or 5 weeks. I would rather rent something cheap until I found what I wanted.
