Buying a Foam Gun But Need Your Help

So im going to be buying a Foam gun in the next few days, but my question is do they all spray the same thickness of foam or does one spray a thicker frothier foam than another. Gilmour makes enough foam guns to make your head spin.

I do not want a foam cannon as bringing out the power washer every time I want to wash the car is a hassle.

Thanks Guys,

Gilmour makes a Foamaster and a FoamasterII gun. The major difference is the FoamasterII is made of plastic and has a ratio selector knob instead of a brass slider.

The main thing you want is a model that has an adjustable ratio, so that would be the following in a FoamasterII:

95QGFMR - Quart Foam Gun w/multi-ratio dial

95HGFMR - Half Gallon Foam Gun w/multi-ratio dial

or these in a Foamaster:

75QGFMR - Quart Foam Gun w/Multi-Ratio Stem and Deflector

75HGFMR - Half Gallon Foam Gun w/Multi-Ratio Stem and Deflector

Most guys use a quart size gun and the best prices seem to be at Amazon:

95QGFMR or 75QGFMR. The latter is out-of-stock but according to Gilmour that is only temporary and because they relocated their production line.

Eliot Ness knows his foam guns so I can't add to his info at all.

I have one though, and have been very happy with the thick foam produced with the Detailer's Pride Extreme Foam Gun Soap Stuff of Whatever It's Called.

I also use the same stuff in my Foam Cannon.

DP Extreme .... in the foam gun = very good thick and luxurious foam.

DP Extreme .... in the foam cannon = most excellent thick and luxurious foam.

You may not save a lot of time but you'll enjoy experimenting with various products, mixtures, and dilution ratios in your new foam gun.

I just tried out my Foamaster (brass version) for the first time today.

I was home for lunch and we finally had above freezing weather so I could use the hose without worrying about any pipes cracking and the landlord wanting to kill me.

Used 1:3 Optimum Car Wash in the reservoir with the brass pin set to 1:4.

LOTS of foam IMO. Pretty thick too.

I was actually going to try to wait for all the foam to "dissolve" before rinsing off but started to lose patience.

I guess I can try out the sample of DP shampoo that came with it next time to see if there's any difference.

But so far quite impressed with both the gun and OCW.

I've got a fair amount of time with the FMII and place a high value on the on-the-fly foam output control.

Since I ran over my Foamaster late one evening last fall :wall in a hurry to get the car in the garage I now have a FoamasterII on order.

best vendor for the FM2?
The best price I've seen for them is at Amazon with free shipping......there is a link in my previous post. Tom's gun is blue because Gilmour makes them other colors for companies to sell as their own.

Thanks Elliot Ness I was hoping you would see this everytime you answer a foam question it is dead on, thanks again.

Tom P So that is the one with the selector knob and the other one is the one with the brass pin that slides in and out correct?

Also can you use any car wash in these foam guns or should you use specialy made for Foam Gun's car wash?

If those Foam Cannons weren't so much money I would it might just outweigh the pros and cons of pulling the PW out every few days, but for now I think I will stay with the Foam Guns.

Thanks Alot Guys,

Yes, that's correct.

You can use any soap you like, some do work better than others, IME.

There is another thread (or two or three) on "which shampoo is best for the foam gun". Of all the soaps I've tried, I feel the Optimum is the best in the foam gun...at least for my needs.

both ONR and OCW are fantastic products.

in fact, most optimum stuff i've tried have been very good.

that being said, I wouldn't use ONR for a foam gun if that's what you're asking.

I have never seen ONR create any lasting foam in any solution as that's not really its purpose.

I suppose you could add some to the foamgun along with another shampoo mix for the water softening properties but can't say for how worth it it would be.

FWIW I do use a capful in my wash solution when Im using the 2BM.

........Did you ever try the ONR or just their regular car wash.
Like uberyk mentioned I wouldn't use ONR in a foam gun. Another more traditional car wash I wouldn't waste in a foam gun is 1Z Perls. While Perls is a lovely car wash it is typically a low suds wash.

Now as far as regular car wash soaps that is all I use and they have all worked fine. What I use the most as my favorite car wash is Poorboy's Super, Slick, & Suds so that is what usually goes into my foam gun. I've also used stuff ranging from Zaino Z-7 to some el-cheapo Zymol (a Big Lot's special) with decent results (foaming). I've got a gallon of OCW and some of Griots wash I haven't even opened yet.

The beauty of the adjustable Gilmour gun is you can change the ratio on the fly if you want more or less foam.
