Brake dust problem

While this does not apply to everyone, my experience with the EBC green pads is that they dont even work as well as my stock pads at the track. They faded VERY quickly. But, I think that asbestos pads actually dust less than semi-metallic, metallic, or carbon-kevlar pads. I use Porterfield R4S pads on the street and they dust like mad...a red clay type dust too. Very annoying.

Hmmm, on the track, the EBC's worked OK for me (no worse than stock, but not that much better). The other downside of the EBC's it that they have a pretty short pad life. The manufacturer suggests about 10,000 miles, and I know that I will get less, partly because I have a heavy car.

I've heard lots of great things about the porterfields, but I also heard they were supposed to dust less (are they kevlar also?). I was thinking I might try those next.

On the other hand, I don't know how much of a difference changing only the pads will really make. I think if you want to make a significant difference, you probably have to go with bigger brakes, or slotted rotors. I'm not willing to do that yet, since my car is primarily a street car, with only occasional track use. My understanding is that slotted/cross drilled rotors will really cut down on pad life, and just don't make alot of sense for a street car.

Yell00ITR, take a look at a passat sometime and notice how the front brakes have no dust, EOM nice sturdy pads with little if any dust. The rear ones on the other hand do dust.

The porterfields (I have used the R4, R4S, and R4E) dust a ton, no matter what anyone tells you. And dont use the R4 on the street unless you like scaring people because of the loud noises your brakes make and the pretty sparks that shoot out of your wheels! :)

Pads make the absolute biggest difference in the performance of your brake system, next to the tires you are using. While larger rotors will definitely help reduce fade, they will not necessarily change stopping distances. Try some real race pads like the porterfield R4 or the Hawk Blues and trust me, you will agree. Simply amazing difference. As far as rotors, slotted dont do too much as modern pads do not outgas likes their old counterparts used to. They look cool, help keep the edge of the pad clean, and do help in the rain, though. Cross drilled I would stay from unless they are cast with holes, rather than drilled from a black. Cross drilled are similar to slotted though, more perceived benefit than actual. You will rarely to never see a true race car with slotted rotors (although they look awesome on the 911! :) Multi piston calipers help keep the pad pressure even across the surface of the rotor, and help reduce fade..but again, really dont change stopping distance. Pads are the most important.

DK: Its a joke since this guy ended up popping up in so many places! It would be better if his real name was Waldo. I even have a picture of him at JFKs assassination somewhere! LOL!

Just trying to promote a little humor during this not so humorous time.

I actually thought that was a picture of you. :(

Some people may take offense since he is now pictured atop the WTC. You may want to remove that pic. Me I understand the humor of the guy being everywhere, but some people will get offended. Sorry about the OT post.
