Bra Damage?

I'm considering a bra for the front end of my truck since it really is getting chipped up beyond what i can take since I've "discovered" serious detailing.

In general, do you folks here have a general opinion on car bras? I'm looking at a Colgan bra, but I'm concerned that there might be a little buffeting from wind that might eventually wear through paint, etc.

Thanks for any help on this, and thanks for all the great info on this site. I am a true convert now.

I would shy away from the vinyl bra's, from what I have noticed on friend's and customer's cars, they tend to do more damage than good. I would go with clearbra, as they seem to bubble less than other brands of clear bra's and they are easisly removed or replaced if needed.

Did the vinyl bra on a black Honda of mine. I'd read the warnings, but surely they were overblown, right? Wrong! Found out they were spot on, and in fact overly cautious.

In just a few weeks, with the help of some rain, the black paint was light grey under the bra. Almost white in some places. Created a nice two-tone effect. With time, some of those ares came back up to dark grey. Where the bra had flapped and jiggled it managed to wear the paint away down to the yellow primer. Sometimes down through that to the silver colored steel. Those areas eventually turned rust brown.

So previously black car was now black, grey, white, yellow, silver and brown. Oh, how very attractive.

As an added benefit, the bra frequently would lift up in the wind like a hood scoop, decreasing gas mileage.

I only use Colgan nose, hood, and side mirror bras and have never had a problem. Of course, I put them on only for road trips as my cars don't see the highway for their daily use so that may also contribute to the lack of paint problems. I keep them as clean as possible and take them off to dry if it rains/snows. At most, they're only on a vehicle for a few days out of the year. Never had a problem with loose pieces or flapping.

I have been using a Perfect Fit car bra on my Mustang for almost 5 years now and for 2 years on the Contour before that and have not had a bit of trouble. You just have to follow a few simple rules if you want to use a car bra without the side affects.

1. Get a car bra that fits well, that is most important. You don't want one that fits loosely as it will flap in the wind and can abrade the paint.

2. Do NOT leave the bra on for any length of time when it is wet. If you drive in the rain, take it off when you get home and let it air dry. Take it off when you wash the car and let it air dry.

3. Take the car bra off when it is not needed. Keep it clean, vacume the backside and wash it so that nothing abrassive gets trapped between the car bra and the paint.
