Does anyone here do any boxing, or teach boxing lessons/training? Interested in learning and giving it a try. Any tips to offer? I'm in decent shape and am active as well as hit the gym (regularly for over a year). I'm not in good enough shape for boxing yet, but I'm working hard at it. I just completed a hardcore 40 day cardio program and dropped from 191 lbs to 178. My weight goal is 165 (if that helps at all).

Never boxed but spent two years doing Krav Maga 4-6 times a weel. You will be in awsome cardio shape in no time. It incorporates a lot of striking. but good luck with boxing and you;ll get out of it what you put in.

I used to be really locally involved with the sport but never boxed myself. One thing I can tell you is no matter how great of shape you are in, training for boxing is a whole other ball game. A long time ago I was on a training program with Kronk Gym but it was to get into shape and not to box. You would not know that to look at me now though. I had a sweet set up at my house. Heavy bag, double end bag, speed bag and all that jazz. One exercise we used to do was to hit a bag for 12 3 minute rounds. I remember the first time thinking I was in shape and lasted about 4 rounds with a minute rest between. Remember too that the training is not all exercise. Not only getting into shape but learning how to box is the fun/hard part. To me, the technique is the most important thing. I've been around some out of shape boxers who have good form and technique that'd I'd never thought of messing with. Mickey Goodwin recently died, Former boxer Mickey Goodwin dies of stroke - ESPN in case you don't know who he was, and I used to see him at a lot of local fights. He did not look to be in great shape but he still had the skill and you'd of been a fool to test it. One thing I can tell you, is it's fun. There are a lot of egos in the sport, like all sports, but I miss being around it like I used to be and would really like to get back into it.

It's easy sitting on the couch to forget how exceptional professional athletes are. These guys are not one in a hundred, not one in a thousand, but one in a million. I remember some sports announcer getting in the ring with a pro boxer (because how hard could boxing be?), and saying that the punches came so fast, that he literally could not see them. He felt himself being hit, but just could not see the punches because the movement was so fast. Kind of like how many people can hit a 100 mph fastball.

Some of the community colleges used to offer boxing, not sure if they still do.

You could always train with Frank Shamrock.

see if there is a gym nearby that teaches all aspects of MMA, where you can learn boxing, muay thai (this interest me the most), jui-jitsu, wrestling, etc. i'm sure it will give you a well rounded work out...

Ive done some boxing and it gets you into good shape. May i ask what your focus is? Is it just to get in shape, or self defense also?

primarily to take the good shape I've gotten into in the last year, and take it up a notch.

Ahh, well boxing will do that, but be careful with your joints (wrist, elbows, shoulders) if you have put in many years of buffing cars.

PM me if you have trouble finding a place to work out, i can send you a link to find a MMA school near you that will also get you in shape while adding something abit more useful in the long run than boxing alone.

Yeah I am going to ease into it for sure. These arms and hands make me money lol.

LA Boxing is opening up a new gym just a few miles from me that I'm gonna check out this week.

MMA or Krav maga. Not too many boxing only schools around here. Alot of good kickboxing and BJJ schools as well.

I trained with the Gracie`s for a couple of years. I was training at times 4-5 days a week and that will get you into major shape. Add some MMA, Krav maga , or kickboxing and you`ll be set.

thanks for all the tips guys! I'm gonna give this gym a try next month and see if I like it. I have been off my feet for a week now and in and out of the hospital from an allergic reaction....so not the best time to start training, at least until i feel better lol.
