Bodybuilding and Detailing...

Clean Dean

Keep it clean !!!
Its been 10 years (1998) since I last competed in the WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) and at about that same time, I became much more involved in auto detailing professionally. I guess I just lost my desire to compete, but I continued to train over that time. I definitely believe there is a direct correlation between the obsessive compulsive nature of auto detailing and bodybuilding. Both of these activities give me great personal satisfaction, and both are an art form in which there are so many variables involved in the process, and I am always looking for ways to improve at both.
I absolutely love auto detailing !!! To this day, I still get excited when a customer comes to me with a automobile that has lost its original “luster”, and have all but given up on the hopes that their vehicle could ever be restored to that “showroom shine” it had when they first got it. Their interior now looks worn, dusty and stained and not fresh clean and bright like it once did. I am sure that most of us can relate to the great feeling of when the customer, friend, or family member returns hours later to find that their car has somehow been miraculously transformed back to something it once was.

I guess that how I started feeling about my lost love for drug free bodybuilding. Then about a little over a year ago, I started to think again about entering an amateur drug free bodybuilding competition. , My bodyweight shot up to over 20 pounds over my normal bodyweight of 230 lbs. At 38 years of age, my metabolisms has definitely slowed to a snails pace, and I have found that I need more discipline when in the kitchen, and that maybe competing again could help restore that discipline with regards to dieting.

Well here I am one week out from 2008 INBF Northeast America competition in Matawan NJ, and I have once again found my lost love renewed.

Wish me luck !!!

Any other auto detailing nuts like myself share my love for bodybuilding?

Competing?

I'm waiting for the WTPC (world tooth pick competition) later this year. I'm a five time champion and I intend to hold on to my title. :D

I've never had the genes for body building. I used to work out, but I just never had the ability to get the mass needed to build muscle. Even now I'm busting my butt to gain 20 pounds just so I'm not a 6'2" 160 lb scarecrow and I'm not making much progress. I envy those who are able to grow and shape their bodies like that. Good luck!

Thanks Jngrbrdman.

You would think being tall would be an advantage. I am 6'1' and will be competing at around 215-218 lbs, and I will be competing with guys about that same weight at 5'7" to 5'10". They seem to look so much thicker. I try to get by with good symetry and defenition.

I have been training since I was 14yrs old. Have never gone more than 10 days without training, and even then it was due to injury. I have always tried to do things right (thanks to bodybuilding.com and their forum), but as usual, had to go through trial and error to really understand my body and the way it responds to supplements, rest, nutrition, and exercise.

My first three years was basically an all around "bulk". In reality I was really just trying to put on size w/e way I could and was too lazy to incorporate cardiovascular exercise or clean diet into the mix, even though I knew that I was doing it wrong.. This resulted in me gaining a lot of muscle, but also a lot of fat as I chose the wrong foods to feed my body. When I turned 18 I finally started my first cut and it took me 6 months and 45lbs to get to single digit bf. This also caused me to lose a lot of the muscle and strength I had gained and basically had to start all over again.

This time I followed every single rule possible, read every single article and thread at bodybuilding.com and so far have completed 3 successful cuts without losing too much muscle.

I don't think I'll ever stop training as its my way of "controlling" one of the few things I can control in my life. I may also add that I suffer from social anxiety and that contributes to my obsession into a sport like bodybuilding where the only player is myself.

Bodybuilding is very much like detailing in that there are soo many factors that come into play. Just like some folks feel that detailing is just waxing a car, some people think bodybuilding is just pushing some weight around and drinking a shake.

Just like detailing, once you start, its very hard to stop.

I basically went down a similar path. I played college footbal for a few years, and was really into lifting heavy weight with bad form, and eating like an animal. My sophmore year in college I peaked out at about 295 pounds, and looked like the Michelin man. I did not start getting serious about dieting and cardio until my senior year in college. I also belong to bodybuilding.com and love that site.
We have a lot in common in that if I miss working out for more than a fewdays I feel like I am going crazy. I just returned home from vacation with my family in the Carribean, and the two other families I was with thought it was a bit odd that I had to leave everyday for a few hours to train. It was a lot of fun dieting for a show while on vacation :wall .

Haha.. I used to use horrible form. Seems I have more trouble now benching 225lb than I did benching 315 when I was 18.

I train on every scheduled day, no matter what the circumstances. I go to a gym open 24hrs, 365 a year, with no contract. I've tried every gym in my local area and its the only one I can stand long enough to finish a workout in peace. I've had memberships in all places from boutique health clubs to hole in the wall dungeons. I got the latter of the two right now.

Hey Dean and Joy, I noticed that both of you are into body building while on the forum one day. That's great I am too! It is a great sport and hobby and enjoy it greatly. Dean you are exactly right with the whole renewed feeling. I can relate to that.

I used to train back in high school but an operation put me out of heavy lifting for several years. Now I'm back and feel great. I looked at myself in the mirror six months ago and saw a slob. Gaining weight like crazy and getting the love handles. Then pride set in kinda like when you look out the window and see your car all dirty and get out there to wash it. In December I bought a gym membership and hit the weights. I'm 6 ft. 1" tall and weighed 210 with a 36" waist. Now I'm 205 with a 32" waist. So the pounds are comming off and muscle is comming on. I really feel the pain the next day and got the strech marks back but that is a motivator. My diet has totally changed and I watch everything that Ieat. Last month I switched my routines to 6 days a week. It is a great accomplishment and a great hobby.

It's funny that you guys posted this because I was thinking of the gym earlier. I've been out for ten days now with the lifting part and it's driving me insane. Every day The fire burns inside me. My rotator cuff is screwed up in my right arm. Thank god my Mom is a physicial therapist and gives me light exercises to work irt back. Hopefully I'll be back on the bench on Monday. For now it's just the treadmill and diet.

Dean good luck at the contest next week. Let us know how you make out! You guys have a great weekend!

Kurt

Hi Guys:
I don't post here much but this one caught my eye. I'm 53 years old and have been bodybuilding since I was in my early 20's. Never competed, but always stayed in shape, my best friends are among the best bodybuilders in Eastern Canada. And yes the obsessiveness of both pursuits often come to mind. Nice to see similar people here.

9D4E420 and baker,

I knew there had to be some others out there !!!

Its seems that detailing and bodybuilding share a similar desire with regards to appearance. My personal cars are never "perfect", and now I am obessive again about my physique. Just like a chip in your cars paint, too deep a scratch for correction or a scuff on a wheel, I am finely in tune with all of my physical flaws.

Maybe I need a phycholgist ? :idea

Well just to chime in here.... I lifted for 20 years the last 10 I never missed a day even Christmas. It was a part of my life and I enjoyed pushing myself and seeing the rewards. I started lifting at 20 years old by the time I was 34 I finally got talked into doing my first show. It was my cities first bodybuilding show in many many years well I won my weight class 176 lbs,and took the over all show to. At 35 I decided to do a state show
Mr. Wisconsin masters and I won my weight class again. At 36 years old I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and 5 years after that I am in a wheelchair. Reason I wrote all this.. LIVE FOR TODAY IT MAY BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. I have to go wax my car be good..:D:D:D

So what is everyone's stats. I'm 5'10 at 170lbs 8% bf. I'll post some pics sometime this week after a workout with the blood flowing.

This was 5 months ago after a drastic cut which due to my own fault made me lose a lot of muscle along with the fat. I crash dieted @ 2000 calories daily and continued working out the same high intensity followed by cardio and jiu jitsu training, all for the purpose of making the lightweight division for a NAGA (grappling competition). I've taken it a bit easier with jiu jitsu so now Ive focused solely on bodybuilding and feeding my body.

Clean, what do you think of the proportion. I know its only a back shot, but its the only one I wanted to share with you guys that didn't look funny. I posted the rest on bodybuilding.com's forums 4 months ago.

glen22,

Wow !!! Thanks for sharing. Those are truly words to live by.

joyriide1113,

Great delts, back, and awesome arms. You look like you could have stepped on stage there. Even got the christmas tree in !!! Grappling !!! Are you another MMA nut. I wrestled for 2 years in college, and did some freestyle wrestling also. I just detailed a 3-series for a Brazilian Jui Jitsu club owner. We spoke for about an hour on current MMA fighters. My favorite fighter right now is Anderson Silva. He is (IMO) the Michael Jordan of MMA. I also admire Quentin "Rampage" Jackson. I follow MMA and used to follow Pride when it was in existence. I would have looked to have got involved in MMA, but I am married now with 2 children, and can't afford to take to many shots to head at this stage of my life.:wall

Are you a member of sherdog.com. Great MMA forum, but a lot of Internet tough guys on there. Everyone thinks there a bad @ss on the Internet.

Great shot thanks for sharing !!! I post some pics from my show.

Here is my bodybuilding.com page with one pic from my last show in 1998.

I like BJJ and grappling but not into MMA. Its too much for me. Grappling takes much more patience and thought before executing a technique or move. Don't get me wrong, I still follow all the MMA fights but I'm not ready to step into a cage and go all out.

Your body space looks good. Definately jealous. I plan on building one soon and updating it frequently.

i've been at both bodybuilding and detailing since i was 13 yrs. old. i'll be 59 in july. i've kept up the bodybuilding lifestyle all of my life, even thru 4 yrs of service time, never taking more than 2 wks. off at a time. it does'nt get easier as you get older, on the contrary, it gets harder, you must watch your diet much more closely because your metabolism slows, and you must supplement if you want to continue to grow, i'm 5'8" 208 lbs. 181/2" arms, chest 44"waist 34" thighs 27" calves 17" and my fat percentage is about 15% i won the npc mr. eastern usa in 1986. keep up with it you won't regret it ever, especially when you get older because you'll never have to look back and say, "if only i had kept it up all those years", trust me it will pay dividends. good luck on your upcoming competition. i know what you're going thru to get in shape, it aint easy.:bigups

As far as lifting and using form you are right they will learn. Thats one thing I did from day 1 was to use form and do a lot of reps. I was never going to be a power lifter. My workouts were intense and fast and there was no talking or reading magazines while me and my partner were working out. There was time for that before or after.
