Body shop swirls

drewdown

I got my hood replaced on my car and the bodyshop swirled the **** out of it. And refuses to repaint it, telling me, "its as good as its going to get." They have attempted to remove the swirls and whatnot without success. Going so far as to say, "if we polish it anymore there aint going to be any paint left."

Therefore I am going to do it myself. But I need to know how long I should wait to get at it. I read somewhere that you are supposed to wait a couple months after new paint? Like it matters though, because they already went at it, twice.

Thanks

Ah, this takes me back. Back to the time I worked in the dealership body shop. That's unacceptable to leave swirls in the fresh paint, and it's even more unacceptable to refuse to polish them out.

But many body shop technicians don't know what they're doing, much like most car wash attendants or dealership detailers.

You don't have to wait to polish the new paint. Just don't use a wax or sealant over it for at least 30 days.

Yeah they absolutely fukked it over and tried to tell me, "I dont see anything wrong with it." They attempted to polish them out, but they are completely inept and cannot seem to do anything right.

When the car is in the sunlight its hard to tell, but as soon as I get it home in the garage I want to puke. Its unnaceptable but they refuse to do anything about it.

wait for a sunny day, grab your camera, and take a picture showing the sun reflected through your paint. Make sure the paint is relatively clean.

Yeah I got it in the garage with the halogens on it and I really want to kill someone. Ima try to take a picture and capture it.

Flourescent lamps are also in order when it comes to taking good pictures of your paint's condition. As for that body shop, never again. If you really want to push the issue, tell your insurance that you aren't happy where you got your hood replaced.

This is my brand new hood. I will try to get some better pictures but I only have a 1 car garage, short tripod and not much space. This is their idea of "a pefect paint job."

Insuracne company wrote me a check for $1200 to get the repaires done, however its not my insurance company, its the lady that hit me's. Can I speak with them and let them know that I am not happy?

BTW I am going to fight them tooth and nail until they make amends, either repainting it, refunding my money or paying for a detail repair at my choice of business.

wow... that IS horrible. I too would fight this as much as humanly possible. Yes, you can complain to the lady's insurance, they paid for the repair, they are the ones that you need to talk to concerning your unhappiness.

This is unfortunatly, a common issue with body shops - it becomes a numbers game and they inevitably get in a huge hurry, and hire cheap untrained help.

I'd bet you could convince them to pay for the hood to be detailed...or you tell him your going to cause as many problems as possible. Don't worry about there not being enough paint, as aftermarket clear coats are typically much thinker than factory jobbers. But don't let them buff on it again. If you can find a good detailer, the job can be done right for around $75 (hood only). Or you can do it yourself with a Porter Cable buffer, but I'd hire a real pro.

That is some seriously shoddy work. Let the insurance company know you are not happy and what them to find you a competent bodyshop. I also would think they would expect the dealership to reimburse them for what they paid.

Whoever did the work and whoever told you that is the best they can do should be fired on the spot. I would also report this to the BMW zone rep. Make a huge stink.

I am trying to find someone local to help me out. Whats funny is the sun was behind the clouds when I picked the car up and told the manager that I need to see it in direct sunlight. He told, "it aint going to get any more direct than this."

Dumbshit.

This is where it is nice to be a lawyer. My business card usually results in an "oh crap" look on someone's face when we're having a disagreement. Many times people will just cave and fix the problem without further issue.
