Boat detail 50+hrs - remove oxidized fiberglass

I'm developing a pile of terry cloth and foam applicators because I'm not sure how best to wash the old ones. Do they need to be washed seperately like wax aps in one wash and polishes in another? What about applicators from liquid waxes and polishes that have absorbed the product. Do you need to wring this stuff out first? What kind of soap? What temperature of water? Will my wife kill me if I wash them in the clothes washer?

What's your procedure?

I wash all types of applicators together in my washing machine, liquid Tide, cold water, lay out to dry. Don't wash them with your towels. I do this weekly.

Usually I clean my foam applicators by hand. (Not very fun because you have to squeeze and squeeze the wax out.) I also make sure I keep track of which one I used for which wax so I keep it with the right stuff. As far as the terry applicators - if they are really saturated, I throw them away. (I used Meguiar's cleaner with one once and it just turned gray/ brown and I didn't feel like cleaning it.)

I've read you are supposed to let terry pads out after drying and store foam pads in a baggie after it is dried. Don't quite know the whole story, but that is what I do.

I also wash my towels in the washer. But like most, I keep them seperate. Polish in one pile wax in another pile, etc. I wash my Microfiber towels alone according to product. Window towels get washed seperate from wax removal and QD towels.

I have an old kitchen cabinet in my garage with seperate places for each pile.

As for the foam, terry, and MF appliciators, I like to wash them by hand. I have a gallon soap container with the top cut off, and I usually soak them in a good mix of dish washing liquid, and wash them by hand. If I fine them really saturated with wax or Klasse, I dump in 6 oz. of Isopropyl alcohol to help break down the wax or sealant. I rinse very throughly, and air dry. I guess once you get them pretty clean by hand, you can pop them in the washer.

We they start to show signs of age, I use them to apply 303, or do my tires, or even cut them in quarters and use the small pieces to do my trim.

When I get rid of them, they are really done! Let us know what worked for you. Enjoy!

Here is a boat I detailed a couple weeks ago. Didnt post this for a while since I was too lazy to do a writeup. The owner wanted all the oxidation removed. I used a ton of products for this detail, mainly products from Meguiars Marine/RV line. I also restored all of the fiberglass inside the boat as well.

Process/Products:

Wash with Meguiars Boat Wash.
Remove oxidation with Meguiars M49 Heavy Duty Oxidation Remover.
Polish trailer with Meguiars M44 Color Restorer.
Wax underneath the boat with Meguiars M50 Cleaner Wax.
Wax boat with M50 Cleaner Wax topped with Meguiars Flagship Wax.

Hey Nick... Good way to start off Spring! The boat looks fantastic!

(Gotta love that detailing products table too....[wipes drool off chin.]:p (sometimes the "drool" icon is there, sometimes not!)

Thanks Bill :)

I thought it was the perfect detail to start the spring off as well.

The only thing that was a real challenge was getting down underneath the boat and removing all that oxidized fiberglass. I laid on a creeper but it was still pretty uncomfortable LOL!

Nice job, looks brand new! I haven't seen too many boat details that also included the trailer - that adds a lot to the total appearance.

That thing is now ready for a season of "Private Ports" (love that name).

WOW, Nick!

That boat looks awesome. I didn't know that you did boats. How long did it take you to complete it? Did you really use all those products on that table?

I agree with Bill (it was here this time....haha).

Great job Nick:Dancing Dot:

Thank you Barry.

It took a little over 50 hours to complete, and I used just about every single product that I laid out on that table, I came well prepared LOL!

A lot of different products were used on the inside of the boat due to the various surfaces, the floor, seats, plastic, vinyl etc.

In the end the owner was very happy.

I'm sure he was Nick.

If I ever get a boat, I am bringing you to NJ;)

I know this thread is old, but We detailed a 22ft Grady-white the other day and I used a color restorer to polish the gelcoat using a DA and Megs Soft Buff Polishing pads. The gelcoat shined up a little since it had some chalking, but not like new. I wanted to ask what you used to polish and how you did it.
Thanks

Used several bottles of Meguiars M49 Heavy Duty Oxidation Remover along with a G110 and many Meguiars foam and cutting pads.
