Hey guys,

First, I want to thank the guys who answered my post about touch up paint. Saved my ***.

Oh, and I did this today, outside. 99 degrees, full sun. So my entire process revolved around products that could be used in the sun. And yes, I'm sunburned as a MF'er.

Here's the nuts and bolts of this detail! One of the hardest i've ever done... And the most rewarding! It was fantastic! The after looks like a whole new car, and even though the before pics may not look so bad, the car looked 'grey' in person... it was a shame. Not to mention, this was the first time i've ever tackled touching up such a prominent ding on a car... Anyway, on to the process:

Wash w/ NXT carwash

Clay

touch up ding (sand, primer, 4 coats color, 4 coats clear, wetsand w/2000)

Perfect it - fine cut w/ Wool pad on PC (6)

Perfect it -fine cut w/ cutting pad on PC (6)

Chemical Guys Lasercut w/ cutting pad on PC (6) x2

NXT by hand - let haze for 30 minutes

Natty's Blue by hand - let haze for 30 minutes

Coat of NXT on the wheels, tires done with turtlewax platinium gel

Leather on interior done with Blue Magic Leather, vinyl deep cleaned with Blue magic leather and vinyl cleaner.

wood was waxed with Natty's blue.

A couple of small reviews will follow the pics...

Ok... Thoughts?

A few things... 3M Perfect it Fine cut is still my power cutting compound of choice. Nothing compares. I've tried a bunch of the other popular ones, for some reason, I keep coming back to this... I love it.

Laserbuff = Awesome! It's a great medium cutting/polishing/filling product. It darkens the paint, smooths it out, and leaves a smooth look and feel to the paint that i've had to use two and three products to get in the past...

BlueMagic leather/Vinyl cleaner can get anything out. I'm convinced. It's like a miracle product for me. This car's interior is completely tan, including the dash, which means it was ridiculiously dirty. The cleaner, along with a microfiber towel, got every last scuff out... I was shocked.

The turtle wax tire gel is a neat concept, a bit messy, and a bit too shiny for my tastes. But it's durability has shown on my other vehicles, so I am sticking by it...

NXT paste was a bit finicky in the sun, but I knew that already. It left some streaking, but I was able to get all of it out.

Ok. That's it for me. I gotta go get another beer. and take a nap. I'm beat.

Thanks guys!! I'm really glad with the way it came out...

So... uhh... whatever happened to the 'extreme detail contest'??

:D

Wow very nice comeback with the Z3...you have a flash coming from your "man area" though, you might want to have that checked out! JK Great job with the touch up!

Wow, great job! I am interested in the wool pad with PC, it's been a while since I've been on the forums, but is this now common place? Do you find the wool works well with a PC?

Sweet !!! That refection picture scared the heck outta me. It looks like ME in the reflection !! loololol

Thought I was there for a second. Nice work on the car.

No wonder I couldn't find this thread anymore.... It got moved over here...

At any rate, thanks for all of the compliments!!

Fisherbin - I've only used the wool pad with the PC *twice*. Both on heavily swirled black cars. It cuts the black down very nicely, but does leave a decent amount of hazing that you need to work out with the cutting pads and a good compound. I probably spent 2-3 hours just using the wool pad and then buffing out the haze caused by the wool pad.

For me it was worth it to get this car to a mirror finish. But I wouldn't recommend it unless you're in it for the long haul...

thanks again for the comments!

Yeah Scott, I posted it here too... Exposure whore, I suppose...

MachB5, for the ding, I got Duplicolor's chip kit, which comes with filler, primer, clear and sandpaper. I also got the black color paint that matched the car.

Then, I really just followed the instructions. I filled the chip in to 'level' with the filler and an old credit card, then sanded it smooth when dry.

Then I primed and sanded...

I then applied the color, one coat at a time, and very lightly sanded between. Once I was happy, I went to the clear, and repeated the steps with the color coat.

In person, in direct sunlight, it's not 100%. But it's close.

The biggest issue I had was heat. It was so hot out, the touch up actually started bubbling... I had to quit a few color coats early for fear I wasn't going to be able to finish. Otherwise it'd be perfect.

Anyway, I started out terrified, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I might even have to add it to my 'official' detaling services list...
