Is the black saphire a mettalic or something that makes the two colors that different?

Yep. The actual color is Black Sapphire Metallic.

There's just no way I could stand to see marring on my (daily-driven) vehicles on a regular basis, nor would I want to redo any vehicle on a monthly basis (with anything). I just *have* to have paint that's hard enough to stay nice once I correct it.

But hey, that's just me and I guess that's, as they say, what makes it a horse race ;) Different people see this stuff differently

Is the Jet Black *really* all that different/special/great-looking? I simply don't know from it, never pay much attention to recent Bimmers...to me they're just either black or they're not :nixweiss Is the black saphire a mettalic or something that makes the two colors that different?

Black Sapphire is a metallic with a lot of silver flake in it. Jet black, is of course, flat black. With BMW's orange peel I find jet black to look a little muddy even with it is in perfect condition (which is rare, of course). I prefer Black Sapphire as a colour alone, nevermind for ease of maintenance. Even in the sun it's still pretty black, here are a few full sun shots of random black sapphire cars.

I have a Jet Black 2008 328 Coupe, with the help from the people on Autopia I've managed to keep it swirl free...until today that is... when rallye decided to wash it even with the big sign I put on the dash...

But seriously, go with the Jet Black. It's a little bit of work every weekend, but its worth it every time you look at it. Just be realllly careful not to let girls lean on it

ah shiz......(attempts to find time machine wishing he could find an alpine white 540 instead of jet black)

Your JB paint is nothing like the latest version. I actually love working on the previous generation JB.

Nice car BTW!!!

Terrible advise. :wall:wall:wall :grinno::grinno::grinno::grinno:

You can't keep it swirl free unless of course you don't touch it (wash it)

Yeah, I really can't see most Autopians in their right mind reccommending the newer Jet Black.

And to the dude with the 540, :xyxthumbs, nice car!

Thank you for the nice comments guys!

hopefully i'll come to my senses, spend the money i don't have on a machine polisher and get it swirl free (for a few days) haha...

is the 7424 enough to do the job ?

Ah, OK...roger that. Thanks for schooling me :D

The Black Sapphire sounds a lot like the carbon metallic (think that's the name  ) on my DenaliXL.

I'm assuming all the BMW clear of that generation was basically the same, right? Audi-hard like my '97 M3?

It'll do it, given enough time, *if* you use 4" yellow pads (maybe with orange too, didn't try that) and M105 for the initial correction step. Any other combo will be a waste of time IME, and even the 4" yellow/M105 will be a long, tough job-of-work.

PRETTY GOOD WASH VIDEO:..[link to video]..

Much as I like Mike Phillips and hesitate to criticize anything he does or says, that isn't even *close* to what I'd consider a gentle wash. I actually quit watching it as it was just too much for me to take :scared:

Note that I'm used to washing vehicles that're a lot dirtier than that Mini was, perhaps that explains why his method works to his satisfaction. I don't want to be unfair here, and YMMV, but I simply couldn't use methods like what he demonstrated without marring my paint.

One can do a *whole* lot better than that; even the little tips I've posted a zillion times would make for a greatly lessened chance of significant marring.
