Blue on the pipes

I justed started detailing bikes and I can't find anything to remove the blue on the pipes. I tried Blue Off. It took off some of the blue but left the pipes dull. I used mothers mag wheel polish after the blue off and all that did is leave scratches. I was wondering if anyone could help?

You may want to try some of the products from the English Custom Metal Polishes line. They are available at www.topoftheline.com, and they also have their own website. I remember one of their polishes is designed for removing the bluing. I use their All Purpose and Custom Blend and I am always impressed with their results.

I am still looking for something that will work also. I have tried never dull, mothers, S100 products...

I used to work at a Harley shop here in the dc area. We carried a product called "Blue Job". It worked pretty well at removing the blueing from pipes.

Blue off did get some of the blue off but scratched the pipes. It also made the pipes dull. I just ordered some s100.

Sorry to say you will never get all the blue off and it will never stay off...it's caused by the heat affecting the chrome plating and it can be reduced but never totally eliminated. Be very careful on what is used on chrome, as it is only a thin plating and not a real metal. Any abrasive product will scratch and dull it and then it will need to be replaced. :hippi

I have owned a couple of harleys sad to say you cannot get rid of all the blue.I have tried everything it will lightn up but will come back on the next long ride. Harleys exhaust just get to hot

I would say explain to the customer the problem with bluing and why it can't be competely done away with. Then recommend they get some full coverage heat shields to cover it up if they would like.

I own a Suzuki 1500 LC and have been plagued with blue pipes for a while. I finally decided a few weeks ago to either fix it or kill it. I used 00000 steel wool and Blue Magic metal polish by hand. This removed the blue and left the pipes dull with faint scratches. I followed up with an air powered buffer and some more Blue Magic to bring back the shine. If I look really close I can still see a wee bit of difference in the shine on the affected area but they look 110% better than before. Poorboy is right though, it will come back. The question is how long until then and that depends on the local temps along with the settings of the engine itself.

Dont waste your money unless you are just looking to seal it. S100 will do nothing for those pipes.

For new pipes I used to put on my 2-stroke atv's, I would shoot the inside of the pipe with high heat paint. It would stop bluing and never gave me any problems.

The blueing is the nature of the beast, it's just something that I personally have gotten accustomed to. Because what ever you are going to do it will come back

I think it looks kind of badass. It gives the impression that if you're bike was really pissed it could belch a fireball out the back. The pipes on sportbikes are pre-blued at the factory, it mimics the look of racebikes.
