Blitz on Accord Type R

The other nice thing in a Honda is, when you're talking about performance modifications, it doesn't take nearly as much to make a huge difference. For instance, standard modifications like Cold Air Intake don't seem to make much difference on my buddy's 'Vette at all. But it makes a noticable difference in a Honda. Because an additional 10 HP on a heavy car isn't nearly as noticeable as 10 HP on a relatively light one. With only basic mods, Intake, Headers and Exhaust, you can really increase performance in Hondas.

I don't think its the weight of the car that makes the difference here. I know, I know, the rule of thumb is every 100 #'s gives you 1/10 of a second. But what I mean is that adding 15 horsepower to a engine that only produces 150 horsepower is a 10% increase in power. Believe me, your going to notice a 10% increase in power. However, adding 15 horsepower to a vette z06 producing 405 horsepower would be a drop in the bucket. My brother has a 4 banger that he strapped a KN air filter on. He noticed a huge difference just pulling out of the parking lot. So I got excited and coughed up the $60.00 to put one on my Cobra. I was very disappointed when I got on the throttle and my head didn't snap off. Now I know that you didn't say your friends vette was a z06 I just used the z06 as an example because I'm not sure of what horsepower other vettes produce. I also used the 150 horsepower number because that is what the average Honda makes in America as far as I know. I'm not flaming anyone here, and I don't mean to disrespect anybody. Also different cars will take to mods better than others. For instance I know that high horsepower cars are built very restrictive when it comes to exhaust and intake. The reason being these cars have to pass certain emissions testing along with noise perameters. In order to accomplish this companies like Ford and Chevy (I use Ford and Chevy as examples because they are the ones that I am famaliar with, I'm sure all car manufacterers have to do this to some degree) install very restrictive exhaust systems on some of their cars. The 03 Cobra is breathing through a straw as John Coletti stated when asked about the large horsepower gains (upwards of 25 RWHP!)by replacing the stock air intake with an aftermarket one. Anyway, in a nutshell what I'm saying is that it is the percentage of horsepower gained that we notice, not necessarily the amount of horsepower gained. Sorry for my ramblings and I hope this makes sence to someone besides myself.

underdog: your rambling makes sense :) 25rwhp from just an intake....wow:eek:

I still envy domestics for their raw torque, my 4-banger puts out 156 peak torque at 7400rpm, with a supercharger, that puts something like 200-ish at 3k, but thats still not that much :(

Sweet lookin ride. More incentive to drop that H22 into my Accord. Do you know which cars in the UK come w/ the "blue" H22? Basically its 11:1 compression instead of 10.5:1 like yours. Good for an extra 20 horses or so. Also, does you have have a LSD?

<-- Still jealous

Woah, this thread has gone wholly O/T :o :D

I think the blue H22 is found in the JDM Torneo Euro R, maybe some others :nixweiss

saying that about all honda motors isn't quite true, because even though most motors don't respond too well with the intake/headers/exhaust combo because of the high compression (usually totalling less than or about 15whp), the i-vtec motor of the rsx is in a class all its own. Imagine, if you would, a motor that gains 20WHP out of just an intake, dyno proven :bow :bow :bow. even with all mugen parts on the my prelude, the max that it would add is 15whp :o

If the car is not a turbo I find that VERY,VERY hard to believe. So show some proof.

the dyno i saw was in a magazine; this one shows only a 12.5whp increase, but from what i've read in some forums, 15whp+ isn't uncommon.

edit: the magazine was the October/November issue of Honda Tuning, it had an intake comparison with a RSX TypeS. Stock the car made 158hp and 120ft*lb. The best intake was the AEM CAI which made 178hp and 125ft*lb.

Most Hondas have very restictive stock air intake systems. Mine was drawing air through a 2" opening behind the right headlight, then the air was drawn through a maze like resonator then up into a flat panel air filter, then into the intake tube which is less than smooth internally. All this reduces intake roar, but also reduces actual air intake and velocity.

I now have an AEM cold air intake which places a large K&N style cone filter inside the right front fender, completely out of the engine bay, and the air flows through a mandrel bent 2.5" intake tube. I didn't dyno my car when I made the change, but there was a noticable improvement in acceleration, especially on the 1-2 shift where the rpms fall to 4000 rpm, which incidently, is where the long tube of the AEM intake gives a huge torque boost. It isn't uncommon to see 10-12 more hp spike between 4000-5000 rpm with AEM intakes and 5-10 hp more at peak horsepower over stock.

In addition, the air drawn in is about 20-40 degrees cooler than the air in the engine bay, according to rolling tests done in Sport Compact Car, and every 10 degree drop in intake temperature is worth about a 1% increase in power.

By the way - just to show you how I feel about this car, I am planning on buying a CF/Kevlar GruppeM (make some Mugen intakes) Ram charger intake! Cost - around £600, or nearly $1000

By the way, has anyone seen the film 'One Hour Photo' with Robin Williams? I wish he could have developed my photos (well sort of  )...

Here they are, there is quite a few too!

shiiiiny!!!! i'm loving the unique styling of it! we'll never get anything like that over here in the states. Those are stock wheels right? 16's i'm guessing :bow :bow ? So you're getting the mugen ntake? I would've thought it would be cheaper than here since they don't need to ship it as far.

how about a mugen exhaust? ;);)

Stock wheels are 17" ;) With 215/45 Bridgestones

I did consider the Mugen exhaust but its about $1800-2000 here :( And the exhaust I have now is comparable in quality and power/torque increase :)

The GruppeM will look something similar to this:

oh yea, your car has dual exhausts...that sucks :( for the prelude its only a single exhaust, so it costs (only) $1000

Hey guys and gals.

I am happy owner of an ATR. I have just ordered a Mugen Air Box and am looking forward to this little, expensive beauti. Do anyone here have any experience with the AirBox? Do you know how much more power it will supply?

I am also looking for powerful exhaust system. I know Mugen makes something for my car, but they are pretty expensive. Do you have any good recommendations for me?

Regards, Ben..
