blending touch up paint

i have done searches for this. i may have missed some, but i really didn't find a process for this anywhere.



how do you finish a paint chip after using touch up paint or after appying touch up paint to a "keying" to blend with your awesome wax job?
 
You touch it up so the paint is a little higher than the original clear coat. Then wet sand it down. It may take several coats before the color matches just right. Keep sanding. Then put your clear coat on it. Sand and polish and you are all finished. If you go to a place that sells touch up paint then you should be able to find a touch up kit that includes the clear and sand paper with instructions. Its not too tough to do but it does take a lot of practice before you can get it just right. Its definatly a skill that I need to work on.
 
Try looking in the paint section at Pep Boy's. They have a Plastic-Kote scratch repair kit that contains the materials Jngrbrdman listed for around $10. I recently used this when repairing chips on the hood of my white Cobra and the are invisible now. Just take your time and the results will be great. Also get some 3M tar and adhesive remover, it will allow you to remove all of the paint applied to the scratched/chips up to ~12 after application if you are not happy with the results.
 
That is exactly the same kit I use. its a good one. They have the best color matched paint I've ever found outside of OEM. I need more of those little swab brushes though. Those things are great.
 
For paint I went to an O'Reilly's that has a paint counter and they mixed up an exact match for my car. As for the small brushes my wife works at a dental office and they use them all the time so I have an unlimited supply! :)
 
are you saying that my factory touch up paint in the tube won't work? i have clear coat but the tube is not 2 parts. the color blends nicely. i just don't like the bumps. they are very conspicuous, especially when your nose is 3 inches from the paint.:D
 
Get one of the fix-it kits mentioned above it will have everything you need to level the paint blobs from filling scratches/chips. If the area repaired is small you may be able to simply work down the extra paint and polish without applying clear.
 
ok. i will try the kit. my wife's car has issues. i will practice, uh, i mean, fix her's first. her's is way more important than mine.:p
 
well, you can't feel the touch ups. they are as smooth as glass. but, you can definitely see the touch up paint. it looks like mother of pearl. like i didn't shake it up enough to mix in the metallic. but, i shook vigorously knowing that i needed a good mix. i even went to the dealer and got the "real" touch up paint instead of trusting a 3rd party manufacturer. i could see they were way off in color.



i am not sure what to do now. remember these are scratches from a shopping cart about 4 to 6 inches long. bummer because it really does feel right. if the whole car was pearl it would be perfect. you did a good job explaining to me the technique. thanks.
