Blackfire or Platinum UPP on Metallic Blue?

Thought I’d update this thread with what I actually ended up using. Bought the Platinum UPP and was about to apply it today when I noticed what seemed to be a strong mineral spirits odor. This made me a little apprehensive about using it so I decided to try one of the two unopened bottles of Blackfire 2 I had on the shelf.

I was concerned about the reports of smearing that everyone had mentioned but I guess I lucked out. No smearing at all. I made sure that I shook the living daylights out of the bottle before applying it since I remember the smearing I had with the original formula when I didn’t do that. It was relatively cool and dry today. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. I applied it relatively thin but probably not as thin as recommended. I did the entire car then used a microfiber towel to buff off the haze. Looks great so far. Will do one more coat per day for the next two or three days.

One other bonus, the new Blackfire has a very nice smell. Bottom line, I’m still a Blackfire fan after trying the new formula.

I had great results with BF2 in dry-moderate temp conditions. But in warmer more humid weather I had smearing problems. When I try UPP next spring I hope to leave those problems behind.

Do you need any UPP? I see that you're in Virginia as well. If you're near by, I can offer you my bottle along with the Platinum quick detail at a discount.

tcl, where in Chantilly are you located? Also, do you have a shop?

I'm in Ashburn btw.

I'm not a professional detailer so I don't have a shop. Just a sports car fanatic who likes to keep his car looking good. I'm in the Chantilly Highlands development (off Centerville Road just north of Franklin Farm Road).

tcl- Glad to hear the BFII worked out for you. I'm about to put PUPP on the S8 so we'll see if I notice any difference (good or bad) between it and the BFII I had on there previously.

Yeah, the BF DOES smell better!

Can anyone tell me if there is value to adding UPP over 4 coats of SG? Also trying to understand the exact use of UPP, ie would you ever Wax over it (ie S100)?

Thx

I too have a DB 350Z. I have had excellent results using PUPP, but use it only to polish the car before using Zaino. After polishing with PUPP using a PC, I again wash the car (to remove the oils and fillers). I then add Zaino and sometimes end with a couple of coats of S100 to deepen the shine. http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26841

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have any pictures of it in the bright sunlight (the metalflake really sparkles!)

It must look great with all that prep. You're one of the charter members on the 350Z boards if I recall correctly.

My product selection criteria was the best apprearance for the least amount of effort. Not sure I'm there yet but I think I'm pretty close (Blackfire polish, Blackfire protectant, and then the Blackfire spray for maintenance in between).

As the guys will tell you on this board, proper prep is the most important thing. Once you get the paint surface perfect, just about any of the name sealants/waxes will look good.
