If you're a car care enthusiast, you'll remember back in 2002 there were half a dozen companies making spray (aerosol) carnauba waxes and spray cleaner/waxes. They were great products. These sprays were never meant to replace conventional waxing but were perfect for touch-ups and a quick shine. When time or weather would not permit a full detail, you could spray and wipe your car and enjoy a just-waxed, carnauba shine, in minutes! Pretty good! Bird droppings and insect smear... no problem. Just spray and wipe with a carnauba cleaner/wax and in one step you've removed the contamination and left a bright, protective, carnauba wax shine.
Then, overnight, these spray products disappeared. All of them. Gone! What happened?
What happened was the California Air Resources Board set a 15% VOC limit for spray waxes. Carnauba is nature's hardest wax. In it's natural state, it's as hard as concrete. To liquefy carnauba to a state where it could be sprayed required a high solvent content, typically over 50%. When the US government adopted California's 15% VOC limit for spray waxes it legislated spray waxes out of existence. All of them. No one could make an aerosol carnauba wax and meet the 15% VOC limit. Until now.
Our BLACKFIRE chemist worked on the problem for over three years and finally found a way to do it. I am extremely proud to present BLACKFIRE Ivory Carnauba Spray Cleaner/Wax, the first aerosol, carnauba, cleaner/wax to meet the 15% VOC limit!
Not only is this a spray wax, it is an extremely pure, ivory carnauba, spray wax. This is the same super-refined carnauba found in the world's best paste waxes. Ivory carnauba creates a shine with exceptional depth and clarity. This is literally shine in a spray can!
A second benefit of ivory carnauba is that it can be used on plastic body panels and trim moldings. Normally, wax will white-stain moldings. BLACKFIRE Ivory Carnauba Spray Cleaner/Wax can be used on black wheel arch moldings, trim moldings, bumpers and plastic body panels without staining! My Thoughts:
I have never used any other previous aerosol spray waxes so I cannot comment on how Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Spray compares against them. Because of this products unique place in the market it must stand on it?s own merit.
Durability:
Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Spray is a true, high content carnauba wax that happens to be affordable and easy to use. The process to develop this product took nearly three years because it was difficult to emulsify enough carnauba and delivery it effectively to the paint?s surface with out the use of harsh solvents.
I tested the durability of Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Spray on two vehicles: my wife?s and my mother?s. To make sure that all previous wax and sealants where removed and the paint was bare I washed each car with Meguiar?s Super Degreaser cut about 20:1, then wiped the surface with IPA as I dried.
The beading was flat and lazy; more puddles then actual beads.
After a quick and pleasant application I had my baseline. The beads where now amazingly round and stood up like little bearings. Not bad for a spray wax!
On my mother?s car, which sits in a garage 6 days a week, the beading remained tight and only slightly altered after six weeks. However on my wife?s car, which sees more realistic use, I noticed the beading begin to relent after 3 weeks, eventually falling flat just after the 5 week mark.
This is on par with some of the more boutique carnauba paste waxes!
So what exactly is this Cleaner/Wax? Is it a polish?
No, while Cleaner/Wax has been traditionally referred to as an ?All-In-One? product, Blackfire Ivory Spray does not contain abrasive cleaners or polish. It is a cleaner along the lines of a quick detailer. Part of the long development of this product was finding a way to delivery the carnauba wax emulsion to the paint?s surface. (Too often we focus on what?s in the jar and not what?s actually left on the paint).
What resulted was a very slick product that had great suspension and high lubricity. The very proprietary chemical blend that deliveries a high level of wax to the surface to be used makes Blackfire Ivory Spray an amazing quick detailer type cleaner.
I tested Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Spray against some of most trusted quick detailers on the side of a heavily soiled truck. It was on par or more effective then all products I tested it against at removing soiling with out creating swirls on the paint (with the exception of Meguiar?s Last Touch). It is a very safe detail spray, that happens to lay down a deep carnauba shine on the paint as it works. Or it is an amazing deep glowing carnauba wax that removes light dusting. It?s amongst the very best regardless of the selected usage, IMO.
So when would you/I use Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Spray?
Anytime you want to add a boutique carnauba glow to your paint. It is literally Midnight Sun (using the same carnauba/polymer technology we developed) in a spray. You can use it to remove light dust and soiling, at the car show, between washes (with car) or anytime you just want your car to look freshly coated in luxurious wax. Often we hear complaints from wax aficionados how most spray waxes (and quick detailers) ruin or replace the deep carnauba glow they love. This product will enhance it!
I personally use this product as a professional at the end of every detail prior to handing the keys over to the client. It will remove any final wax or sealants streaks (or clouding) as well as dust or any water that has dripped from an impossible location. It gives me that ?wow? factor that it is important to impressing a client.
I also found Blackfire Ivory Spray Carnauba invaluable on the lawn at this year?s Cavallino Classic Ferrari Concours car show.
It was perfect for removing light dusting and soiling typical of sitting on the lawn, and keeping the vehicles incased a warm carnauba shine.
Directions and Application.
I recently detailed this Porsche Cabriolet that had about a four month old coating of Wet Diamond. The sealant was holding up pretty well but a little boost from the Carnauba Spray reinvigorated the finish and gave it that deep gloss that is impossible to pick up in photos.
Spray from 6-8 inches away, using a quick sweeping motion., working one panel or ? a panel at a time. This picture actually shows too much on the surface. Only a 1 second spray is needed to cover most body panels. Larger panels such as hoods, roofs, some trunks, and truck beds should be covered in two applications.
After misting work the Ivory Carnauba Spray into the paint evenly using sweeping passes with a semi-plush and soft microfiber, such as our Dragon Fiber Magic Towel. As the product appears to ?melt? into the paint, turn the towel over and lightly buff to a high luster. The towel will glide easily across the paint.
Ivory Carnauba Spray is also perfect for door jambs, trunk, hood, and under the hood shuts, or even on windows and bumpers. The spray lays down easily so there is little worry about overspray, although you can spray directly on the towel and apply if you desire more control.
So how does it look?!!
I?m glad you asked, because the look (and the feel) of this product really did catch me off guard. I wasn?t expected a product that it is that easy to apply and remove, and has great cleaning power, to look this great. It really is Midnight Sun in a spray. The look is crystal clear but very deep.
On this Basalt Black Porsche the Metal Flake was crazy on in the sun.
In the shade it looked like I had spent an hour rubbing this car down with wax, not sprayed a quick coating over a 4 month old sealant.
Pros: An excellent quick detailer that will not ?rob? the finish of that carnauba glow. It will only enhance it.
Cons: The aerosol delivery may take some getting used to.
Conclusion: A great shine really shouldn?t be this easy. I didn?t have to stand one leg and chant to the carnauba gods while applying?
Excellent review Todd! I'll be ordering some of this product for sure. Easy is good! Impressive results... (Should look good on my Spiral Grey Vette!):biggrin:ancing Dot:ancing Dot:ancing Dot:
So it sounds like it has no harsh cleaning abilities to strip the sealant off. If you apply the spray on wax, could you apply more sealant or would you have to do an IPA wipedown each time?
