Black Rubber Detailing

I like mine to shine!!!
Seems as though the new cars are fond of using black rubber around the winshield, back window, bottom of the side windows, and in the body up on the roof as a water channel. Some of the rubber cleans up nice and some just refuses to come clean at all. Especially the Pontiac GTO. The rubber water spots, and has brown marks that refuse to come clean. Sure you can use a dressing, but that's cheating. I want it clean and looking good, not shiny and smeary. Anybody have a way to clean the black rubber that proliferates on today's cars?

I've just today used Meguiars Gold class trim detailer for all the rubber and plastic trim on my car. Absolutely fantastic! It's the one area I always seemed to miss when detailing my car. Looks better than new. Recommended :-)

Also, I just used a product called 'Rain-X' cleaner and protectors on my glass. Again I am pretty amazed at how great the car looks. It is much better than my usual Autoglym fast glass cleaner. Won't go back to that now.

Those two products have really put the finishing touches to my car. Happy!

iv used megs OTC vinyl and rubber cleaner and protector. iv found a good way to work it is to spray on a MF towel, wipe and clean the piece in question, then spray it on your hand and work it in to the surface of the plastic or rubber realy well, till its almost dry. i find that realy helps it get into the surface.

Mothers Back to Black and then cover with 303. If its trashed I'll use softscrub, if its hammered 0000 steel wool. The Megs trip detailer eventually spots. 303 is the only product I think I have used long enough to say really works well at what it does for extended protection. I've had a car that after 5 years in the sun had rubber that looked just as good as it did when new.

have 05 mustang and had same problem.took the strips on the roof off and light sanded them, then sprayed them gloss black.let them dry a couple hrs and clearcoated them.so far after a lot of washes and az heat, there doing fine.

I use meguiars trim detailer on the larger trim, though I don't really like to use it on window trim as much. It feels like it leaves a little bit of film to me even after wiping it off. I prefer using Mothers Back to Black on smaller trim.

I use either Back to Black or Stoner Trim Shine, which is a spray. I like it better than back to black. If it's a small area, then #40 Meg Vinyl/Rubber Cleaner/ Conditioner.

I cleaned the rubber on my trans am with WD-40, scrubbed it until it didn't turn the rag black anymore... Made them look like new, flat but like new.

Griot's rubber prep works extremely well for getting rubber absolutely clean.

Yeah, great product :xyxthumbs

Keep it off of modern auto glass though, that sorta rules it out for use around my windows.

Instead of starting a new thread I just wanted to add that I tried Leatherique Prestine Clean on the window rubber trim today. The customer's vehicle had brown spots all over the rubber, and the presting clean did a very good job. Got the brown spots completely off, unless they turned brown again on his drive back home:)
