Black paint - What's your fav combo?

I know this is one of those questions that gets thrown around a lot, but spring is almost here and new products are continually being released.

What is your favorite combo for black paint? I'm looking to switch things up this year and try something new with the UDM. Post some before/after pics as proof if you'd like.

I'm not looking for severe paint correction,..just the usual swirls/light scratches that come with driving a black car during the winter in the Northeast.

Thanks guys!

I've done a black S2000 (my only black car detail) with Z-AIO and a coat of Z-5p, and I was stunned on how well it looked. I think it really matters on how well you prep the car before the LSP... especially black.

I've used Zaino, and for durability I'm not sure it can be beat. I did try using Z-PC with the UDM to remove swirls and I really wasn't that impressed.

I just looked at that link. The S2000 looks amazing. The menzerna IP did a great job removing the swirls. I may try that with the UDM, although I'm not sure which pad to use.

You might need to upgrade to a little more aggressive polish, but try moving up to an orange pad first.

I don't remember which pad I used with the Z-PC. It was the most agressive pad that came with my UDM set though. I do however, think that a more agressive polish is needed, maybe something along the lines of Menzerna IP.

Honestly... I played around when I started using the PC for the first time. Start with an oragne pad with a light polish such as Z-PC. If that's no go... upgrade to a polish such as IP with a new orange pad. That's just an example.

I wasn't happy with the results from Z-PC, which is why I'd like to try something more agressive.

Try Menzerna IP, or super IP (never tried it yet).

I would also try Sonus SFX-1. I'm sure others will recommend different polishes, but those that I list are what I use at home.

My favorite combo for black is

Moderate swirl removal -

Poorboys SSR2.5 or Menzerna SIP or IP (SSR2.5 has a bit more cut) with a Orange (med. aggressive) or White (polishing) pad. The pad needed will depend on the severity of the swirls - do a test spot to determine which pad will be needed.

Finishing/light swirl removal -

On black, the best finishing polishes are Menzerna finishing polishes (106ff, po85rd or FPII) - nothing I've used finishes down as well as Menzerna.

Protection -

I always use a good carnauba on black, it may not last as long as a sealant, but it gives the paint a nice deep, rich glow...And since black paint shows every imperfection, a carnauba wax will also help cover slight imperfects - unlike a sealant that can highlight them.

I'm a big fan of Meguiars #80. I've tried a bunch of different polishes in comparison and always go back to #80. The only thing I like better is for light swirls/cobwebbing, I perfer Poli-Seal. Poli-Seal cuts really, really fast for me on light stuff so I can bang out a "touch-up" polish on my black car in an hour or two w/ the stuff.

For LSP combos, #7 + M26 is hard to beat.....though latetly, anything I add Aquawax too seems to knock my socks off.

Here's a few pics of my experiences.

do you use a PC, UDM or rotary?

I have 2 black cars and I have a hard time taking the swirls and little scratches off.

Cheers

Nick

I use a PC7336 and 5.5" LC Low Profile Pads. Been thinking about stepping up to a rotary so I can get about 98% correction vs. the 90-95% that I get with the PC...plus saving time, but haven't made the jump yet.

I love ZAINO on Black! I am starting to realize though, alot of fantastic results can be achieved using any combination of different products. Generally though, I found Zaino to turn the finish into a mirror, and I found Nuba waxes like Collonite 845 to make the finish shimmy and look soaking wet. It depends on what your looking for.

My 96 SS without Zanio (and the grill I hated for all you guys who notice everything)
