Black 2012 Sonata Hybrid, paint correction and Opti-Guard protection

RaskyR1

Rasky's Auto Detailing
Did this one a few weeks ago with some help from Justin. Client had contacted me inquiring about the cost of the Opti-Guard application so we scheduled a time to meet where I could evaluate the cars condition. Over all it wasn't too bad, but there were several deep RIDS and the PPF looked terrible for having just been installed. The car had been prepped by the dealer and then washed once by the PPF installer...other than that it had not been washed by the owner and hasn't seen rain or snow yet. For some reason the metal panels were a PITA to correct, products didn't want to wipe off and just acted weird...we tried man different combinations too. The bumper covers and lower rocker panels didn't have this issue, but the clear was much, much harder!

Process:

Wash - ONR

Wheels - Sonax FE

Tires - OPC

Clay - Blackfire clay with Final Inspection as lube

Initial Correction step - D300/MF on the GG6. M101 on the rockers via GG6 and Cyan LC pads

Refining step - 106fa via GG6 equipped with black LC pads.

Jewelling step - PO85RD via Flex PE14 and blue LC pads. (106fa on the DA looked really good and Justin and I agreed the owner would have been more then happy at that point. However, a test spot with PO85RD via rotary made a slight, yet noticeable difference on this paint. I had the car an extra day and some time to kill before Justin came back so me being OCD, I went ahead and did this step on the house)

Coating prep - ONR wash followed by a good wipe-down with Eraser

Opti-Guard - Applied using Carpro Micro Suede applicator (All paint, trim, lights, wheels)

Swirls in the paint didn't translate too well in the pics...

The swirls in the (brand new) PPF showed up pretty good though...

50/50 on the PPF

Swirls on the rocker panels showed up well too (they were a little worse though)

Pulled the car out in the sun after an Eraser wipe-down to check my work and get sun pics while I had a chance. These are prior to Opti-Guard

Justin followed me leveling off any high spots....the 2 person application is great IMO!

Look how focused he is!

Paint looks awesome, Chad! That subtle flake makes for a nice effect, and really pops with everything dialed in properly.

I just wish I could get myself to like Hyundai's designs....

Close your legs next time you flash us Chad :P

Great looking correction, it didn't look very metallic in the sun, but it did look great nonetheless.

For those who are not up on all the paint systems.

All the bodies at the plant get the same paint system, it is only after they go through the paint line, are the hybrid things installed.

Just a heads up for newbies, it is the same paint, same base, same clear, etc.

Wasn't my intention to make it seem otherwise, Ron. ;)

This is the first newer Hyundai I've done, though I did do a new Kia Optima...I was just pointing out that the plastic panels acted differently, and the clear was noticeably harder then the metal body.

Thanks guys! :)

Another perfect detail from Chad - excellent!

how is that applicator?

I like it a lot better then foam, Thomas. It seems to put down a more uniform layer of product, better for edging the panel, and everyone I know that's tried it, like it as well. ;)

Great work guys. Chad what is this "eraser" you use for opticoat prep?

It's CarPro Eraser

Actually I looks and smells just Dawn and IPA, but it does seem to work really well. :D

I realize that was not your intention.

Guess I was trying to get ahead of the newbie questions, you know, "I got a hybrid and since it is special, the paint is probably special as well and what blah, blah, blah?"

Not knocking them either, just getting ahead and save some time, maybe.

Nice work on the car!

Last night at the club , was asked again, "what new car should I consider, etc?"

Because of the type of person, know their driving habits, etc, told them get a Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima, both are by the same company and just go look at all the posisitve feed back on these the last couple of years.(and another plus for these older folks ego's-both are made in the USA, vs some "domestic brands" that are not assembled in this country.)

That age group is not aware of it being a global market these days and are quite surprised when I tell them where some of their "domestics" are produced these days.

Right on, Ron.

My best friend, the one who bought my house (one I still detail cars out of) and his girl friend were looking at this Sonata when I had it there. Well, she just put an order in for the exact same car last weekend! :)

Going from a late 90's Ford Exploder to this is going to be a huge difference in mpg for her! I guess she got the car for under invoice too and I was surprised to hear that the battery actually has a lifetime warranty! They've definitely stepped up their game compared to the cars I remember back in the 90's.

Try the mid 80's!

They got in the car business by buying dies and molds, etc from Mitsubisi, and walla-they got a car to sell and learn the business from.

Those old ones would go 200,000 plus if the owner did simple, regular maintance.

Just that all the trim would have fallen off, etc, but they would keep running.

The Koreans had a hard time realizing that they should listen to the market place in which they sold cars, IE poor trim, interior, styling etc for years-they built for Korea and Asian markets.

One of the engineers I used to work with at Hyundai-USA once told me (late 90's) "no sense for us to get carried away about fit and finish, etc, people look at our cars as "throw aways" and don't care after the second payment what it looks like."

Like you said, it's all changed.

I can't wrap my head around the paint on that thing. The guy who put the clear bra on (poorly) had to have put something else on the paint. I've never had 105/D300 or anything like that smear around so badly and just not wipe off. Don't get it.

Rasky,

Ever since I did my first application of Cquartz with the provided block and felt mini microfibers CarPro gives you I have been ordering them for Opti-coat as well. I just love the way they retain very little product and give a nice even coat. I see you do too, unless my eyes are fooling me on the applicator you are using for Opti-coat.

Great work as always. I like the look of the Hybrid SOnata better than the regular one.
