In the beginning.....

I should start by saying I had no idea it would take this long when I agreed to detail it, but this is how it turned out. I'm very pleased with the results, and I learned a few things along the way.

This car was garaged for something like 20 years, but for the last two years it has sat in a filthy, loose-fitting car cover, which removed all gloss from this single stage paint in many areas because it rubbed against the paint in the wind. I've never detailed a car in such poor shape, but it only made the results that much more impressive and rewarding.

I'm still not done detailing the interior yet, but I will finish Sunday and take a bunch of picturess in the sun to give you a better idea of what I did. Consider these the teaser pictures. I will say that now that I'm done with the paint, I think this is the nicest paint I've ever seen on a car. It's all original, and there is absolutely no orange peel. It's great. Not to mention that the car came off the assembly line the same month I was born in 1985.

What I did:

wash

clay bar

wash

1 or 2 passes with the Menzerna IP with the harshest pad on the UDM depending on how bad it was (I think I should buy the PG too)

1 pass with Ultima PP+

Ultima PGP sealant

Driver's side fender with major damage

Looks like all of your polishing paid off. Does the lower right side of the hood still need more work or is that the light being distorted?

Can't wait to see some sun pics.

Good eyes. Those are actually tiny paint bubbles from a bra that was on the car and I believe water got under it and messed up the paint. So the front foot of the hood is covered in tiny paint bubbles. It kind of takes away from the rest of the car, but there was nothing I could do about them.

You really brought the paint back to life! Too bad about the front, but the 80s was the age of bras - I had 3 80s Porsches, all with the same bra rash.

What's weird is the interior does look like a 1985, but the targa hoop is brushed aluminum, which Porsche stopped using in the 70s.

Great turnaround!!! Did you end up doing anything with the trim? I noticed that the drivers door handle was lookin' a little harsh. Try Poorboys Trim Restorer...work wonders!!

Yeah, I think part of the targa top flew off one day on the highway, so parts of it were replaced, although I don't know why they would replace the aluminum section with something older....

I tried some basic rubber/plastic conditioner (Stoners IIRC), but it didn't do a darn thing. Is the Poorboys Trim Restorer similar to Mothers Back to Black?

Thanks for the compliments guys!

PB Trim Restorer actuallypenetrates the plastic and appears to help to "restore" it. I have never used "Baack to Black" but maybe others could chime in?
