hi gang,



for the last 18 - 24 months I've ben using Meguair's proffesional products and have been satisfied so far. most of my supplies are now running low and I need to replentish them so it may be time to switch. I like to buy in bulk (one reason I stick with Meguair's) to keep coasts down.



Anyway, this is what I use now on the paint:



* Meguari's Overspray Clay with #34 Final Inspection as lubricant (once a year or as needed)

* Medallion Paint Cleaner (once a year or as needed)

* #7 Show Car Glaze (every other wax job or so)

* Medallion for all Paint (every 3-4 months)

* #62 Car Wash (wash the cars every 1-2 weeks)



These are the cars:

2001 BMW 330i (white)

2000 Subaru Forester (white)



anyway, I've been resisting the itch to move to P21S carnuaba paste wax and the much hyped Zaino products. so I'm running out of everything except the paint cleaner, clay & show car glaze. my questions are as follows:



1) if I move to the P21S paste wax, will the Medallion paint cleaner and the #7 show car glaze be fine for paint prep or should other products be used that might work better with P21S?



2) what about replacing the paint cleaner and #7 with 3M IHG?



3) does the #62 car wash "condition" other brands of wax as well or would a P21S car wash product (one that is hopefully available in bulk) be better suited to the task?



4) will the #34 Final Inspection spray (available by the gallon) work well with the P21S or is there another products better suited to use with the P21S carnuaba paste wax (again, one that is hopefully available in bulk)?

Hi Paul, I've heard good things about P21S it is supposed to last really well for a carnauba. Since it isn't a cleaner wax it should work just fine with the paint cleaner and #7 polish. I have used #7 with different brand non-cleaner waxes and they worked fine together.



From reading this board I've found the Meguiar's clay bar is at the bottom of the list for prefered products. The most common complaint being that it streaks more than other clay products like Mother's.



I think that your wash soap is just fine. You just want to use a cleaner meant especially for cars.



Meguiar's Final Inspection garners high ratings from me. I've used it on several different waxes and sealants with great results. In fact I just bought a gallon of this stuff last week.
 
Hope you don't mind me hazarding a few comments:



1) Stick with what is working for you now even if you move to the P21S wax. I don't see a reason why you would experience any problems by switching to P21S but you never know how certain products will react to one another. So no point in using different products until you have some P21S on the car.



2) I think you will find IHG and #7 almost identical in performance and results. Try the IHG if you are the curious and experimental type; stick to the #7 if you are the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type.



3) Same as #2. If #62 is working for you and you are happy, stick with it unless you want to try something different.



4) Same as above. FI is a great product and on a par with others like it.

hehehe... having been a mechanic, I'm familiar with the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." but when I was a mechanic and refering to my own car it was more like: "...and even if it is broken, don't fix it until it falls off and the car no longer runs" sort of like "the plumber's plumbing" :p





anyway, I'm running out of most of my supplies so I'm open to trying something new. I won't be throwing anything out or pushing anything to the back of my supply cabinet to make room for the new stuff.
 
Unlike Short Cut, I've read in here probably a hundred times about how short lived P21S wax is. I'm suprised others havent jumped in to pan it. Supposed to shine great though.

that's what the folks at carcareonline say. the folks at thewaxtest, though, claim the opposite. I'll start a new thread on this subject. thanks!
 
P21S lasted a long time for us, but our panels weren't subjected to road abrasion, and we washed them with a very gentle cleaner. Now, that said...



I've been using the P21S ever since we "discovered" it during our tests, and the durability is on par with other carnaubas, save for Collinite. Collinite is the most durable carnauba we've seen to date - we applied it to one of our own vehicles in early December, and it's still going strong.



The look that the P21S provides is very pleasing to us, and the Paint Cleaning Lotion works really well. It appears to be completely compatible with Meg/3M products too.

are you one of thewaxtest guys? what about the polymer tests like zaino? I've been resisting zaino because of the hype but am not sure if I can hold out any longer. ;)
 
I have been using the same products as you have on my Explorer for several years. I always applied with the PC and removed by hand. I thought the shine/color/depth were extraordinary.



This weekend though, I am making the switch to Zaino. If the results live up to the talk around here, and the pictures on the Zaino web site, I should be one happy camper indeed. It will be an interesting comparison to make. I sure do like the idea of being able to simply apply another coat whenever I like. With the Meguiars system, I hated to just wax over the old. I just couldn't do it. I always wanted to clean, polish, and re-wax.



My point is, if you really want to try something different, why not try a polymer this time instead of just switching wax?

Indeed I am - I founded the whole waxtest mess... ;)



Zaino & Klasse will easily outlast any carnauba. We liked both of these products for their durability, and others on here like them for their shine/look/durability/etc.



It sort of depends on what your ultimate goals are - the P21S is a good wax for a "wow!" effect, but you'll be waxing more often. It is very forgiving - you can get it on trim, use too much of it, etc and you can recover pretty easily.



The Zaino is very "slick" once it's applied, and it's got a ton of durability. Now that ZFX is out (which we'll be testing next week), it is supposed to be much easier to use, and more "forgiving". I've cheated a bit and tried it on a portion of my Tahoe and found it works very well. The synthetics don't work "directly" with the Meguiar's products - you'll have to Dawn wash after you prep with Meg's/3M's, and before applying Zaino.



Klasse is pretty easy to use, likes to be layered, and offers great durability as well. I haven't used this on any of my personal vehicles, but it did well on our panel (durability). There are tons on this board who know more about Klasse's benefits, so I'll leave that to them.

I'm not sure I want to make the jump to a polymer just yet. I just want to get a really good carnauba. I'm either going to stick with medallion or jump to P21S or *maybe* blitz.
 
A good polymer will help the paint resist brakdown from acid rain UV light, somthing a Carnauba can't. So give one of the polymers a try.:up
 
are Klasse and Zaino the only decent polymers? if I remember correctly from thewaxtest, the were about equal in all of the tests, right?
 
There are other polymers & synthetics than Zaino & Klasse, but their effectiveness is highly subject...the Zaino & Klasse proved to be the best of the group in our initial tests.



It rained like crazy here yesterday and I can say this much - the Zaino'd panel is still beading water like it did on day 1 - and we first applied the Zaino on October 21, 2001. The Klasse isn't beading water, but it never really did - it sheets the water instead of beading.

if it's so great why did you <em class='bbc'>have[/i] to switch?
 
so what does a year's worth of zaino paint products (clean, polish, protect and wash) cost? the bottles are awfully small. :rolleyes:
 
No one has to switch. One just may not like waxing every three weeks, and some like the look of a polymer more than a carnauba.
