Hi, I am new here and I have been a lurker for quite some time. I feel it's time for me to participate and learn more. I am completely new to detailing and was just wondering what you people do when you purchase new towels to detail. Do you wash them before you use them? or you just make sure they're clean and use them. Thanks

Welcome!

First of all make sure that you are buying 100% cotton made in the US towels. Then you need to trim off all the edges and parts that are not nice and soft. Then you should have the edges sown with 100% cotton thread.

Yes its kind of a pain in the a$$, but you don't want any scratches DO YOU?

Never wash with any fabric softener or other stuff in the wash. The recommended detergents are Liquid Tide (Original), Dawn, Wonderwash, and the like.

The reason you should wash brand new towels before using them on your car is because the manufacturing process uses chemicals called "sizing" that may or may not have been washed out. These chemicals will smear and make a mess (noticeable only by Autopians, but then again, you are one now...)

Just pop the towels in the washer. Don't mix cotton towels with other laundry or dirty rags. Don't wash your towels with anything that has touched your wheels! Don't wash MF towels with anything but other MF towels. Don't use bleach ever (this causes the cotton towels to deteriorate over time much quicker). And don't use fabric softener or detergent that has softener in it.

This sounds so scarry but it makes sense and works fine. Just use some liquid All, Wisk, whatever you probably have on hand and wash on warm with an extra rinse. That's it!

As far as having your cotton towels serged. Only do this if you are sure you are using 100% cotton thread. This is not easy to find. You can fold your towels so that the edges never touch your car and just be careful. I have found that I use MF towels more and more now because I don't have to worry about the edges. Hope this helps.

So I love BFWD but I sometimes read a comment or two about some bad results when used on black. I probably won't do another detail until Spring but I will be detailing a 2011 black Camaro. I would like to hear some experiences about BFWD and black, pros and cons. I will always use BFWD unless I'm convinced that it should not be used on black cars.
If BFWD should not be used on black, what would you suggest?

I used it on a black infiniti and had no issues and it looked great.

Just make sure to apply it supper thin. Remove it right away, or wait about 45 minutes and buff off. Either way will work fine.

No issues for me on black. :soldier:

I also use it on many color's including Black and found no problem at all. It could be user error or using a bad applicator that has been use with something else ( another product or not clean ) or a bad towel.

Okay, I will join...

I used it on my black infiniti paint and had streaking when trying to remove with all types of MF towels. It left an oily residue. I would say make sure you shake it up and don't apply excessive product. Despite trying these measures I still experienced issues. However, this was my first time using BFWD and even polishing my car, I'm a noob. Also, heard waiting longer to buff off might help.

One of my car is black (it's my beater and daily driven), and after applied BFWD, i love my car so much, since i could easily washed my car and the most important one, mine looks great, thanks to BFWD. Well, only one complaint then, i couldn't get the 32 oz and 64 oz version in my area.

I've used it on black (S4) and deep grey (GTI) no problems at all. I usually apply it to the whole car, have a snack, then buff out.
