BFWD Application Question

i know its not in every city/state...but id like to know some things about it...how much did it cost...who installs it(dealer??)..what kind of guarentee does it have...did anybody actually get there car back...pros/cons????i mean it was all the rage a few yrs ago....oh..wait til lojak comes out...its awesome...thenit came out...and i hardly hear anything about it...i hear more about the club than lojak...:p

They have LOJACK in New Orleans and a cop friend tells me the average return time of your car when stolen is 12 minutes after you you call LO JACK.

From what I understand it is installed by stereo resellers and such.

I always ask how many times have you ever had a car stolen? I will use my onstar and hope they do not hide in parking garages which I do not think they will.

Dude - if you're talking NYC - Lojack is almost a *must*.

Not so much because of recovery (although, recovery is supposed to be pretty cool) - but because of the savings on theft insurance.

If you only have liability insurance - then you don't get the savings, and you're only getting the protection. If you've got collision - anywhere from 10-20% of your premium is going to disappear. Considering how high premiums in NYC are - you can make back the cost of Lojack within a year, in some cases - and get the peace of mind for free.

I have a similar system in my MB (part of an Onstar like system, with stolen car recovery) and if it didn't come with it, I would definitely have installed it anyway.

My $0.02,

LoJack is a great product. If you have it and your car is stolen, I would say 99.9% of the time you are going to get your car back.

The only problem with LoJack is the coverage area. If your car is stolen in an area with coverage, but they drive it into an area without coverage then you are screwed because they can't track your car. I am not sure about price, last I looked I thought it was around $600, but I am not sure.

But overall, great product.

Onstar only saves me about $20 a year on insurance and I could not see LOJACK being any different.

IS there an annual fee for LOJACK??? I know the car sends out a signal to cops equipped with receivers but what if the thief is smart and disconnects the battery and tows your car away???

what u say makes so much sense...but honestly...i mean i grew up in Brooklyn..lived in Staten island..and now the Bronx...i dont know anybody who has it...i know all mt friends have you know like the Viper...etc...but not Lojak...how much did yours cost to get put in??/i mean...20% off is alot especially in NY...i pay about $4k/yr....for my car now...and Guess...pls dont tell me you pay like $600/yr or ill shoot myslef....:p SRL...600 sounds ok.....but it cant be hooked up to your battery can it???i mean thats too easy for them to disconnect it....it has to have its own indpendent power supply right???i m gonna do a search on the web and see if there are some articles.....like from law enforcement sites....not ads...etc....ill be back:)................is the onstar similar....i never heard of it:confused:

Floni-

You gotta be *NUTS* to live in NYC and pay the insurance premiums here for theft insurance (which are a LOT) and not have something like Lojack.

The system costs $600 to install, and it's a one time fee. Think of it this way:

You spend $4k a year on insurance. Let's say $2500 of that is just your comprehensive coverage. If you save 15% on that = then you've saved $400 per year.

Inside of 2 years - you made your money back, and saved another $200. Totally worth it.

Can it be defeated? I've heard it can - and because I work in a security related field, can't discuss exactly how - but I can tell you that it has a backup battery, that is concealed within the unit - which itself is hidden on the car, at different locations within each one.

Honestly - it's a judgement call as to how effective it is. But I'm in it for the money :) call your insurance company, see how much it'll save you - if you make the money back inside of 2 years, go for it. I have a friend with a Vette that pays $7500 a year in insurance. He was skeptical at first, because the dealer wanted $1k to install the system (some BS about it being a vette). Told him to go visit another dealership, who installed it for the standard $600. He saved almost that much in his first year of insurance alone.

Onstar - check it out here. Not exactly what I have (TeleAid is MB's equivalent) but it's pretty cool. Not worth the money, IMHO, because of yearly fees. I'm not down with yearly fees :)

Good luck,

-J

FLONI you pay HOW MUCH??? JEEEEEEEEEZZZE

I pay about 1k a year for some high coverage with tiny deductables on comp.

I use the onstar for other things plus I can write it off as a business expense in my case.

One of the reasons that Floni pays so much for insurance is that the Maxima is high on NYC's most stolen list. My Caprice was #3 on Chicago's.

I have lo-jack in my highlander. It was around 600 to get it installed.

I'm serious about this part too. The guy showed up at my house at 9:30PM in a plain white van with dark tinted windows. He installed it at my house.

A few years back. The last I heard of it, they did not cover NYC. Check into that. Also, your comprehensive portion of your insurance is probably more like 400-500 bucks, so a 20% savings on that is not that much.

I for one, would rather spend big bucks on something preventing someone from stealing my car. If someone does steal it....I don't want to find it....I hope they would drive it into the east river so I could just get an insurance payout. It will probably be beat to hell and scrapped...........and who the hell wants to car back after all that.

A firend of mine actually has a note he leaves in his car that bascially says he doesn't want it back either, or if it is found, he just wants the burned out frame. It really sucks to get a recoved car back becasue things are usually totally screwed up on it (dash and seat ripped, smells, etc) and the title is also adjusted to say "stolen and recovered" which jacks your resale value.

A local dealer had an A6 stolen off the lot a few months back. The cars was gone for a weekend and was later found down the street in the same condition except it had an extra 4000 miles on it. Car was selling used a few days later at half the price of the new ones.

I have the Lo-Jack alarm on my SVT.

You could get just the recovery system or the recovery system with comprehensive alarm. by that i mean, shock sensors, arming device, siren, battery power cut off, etc...which is what i have.

it saved me 340 dollars this year on insurance. I live in MA and my insurance is pretty good without it, so I was phsyched when I saw that savings.

I didn't get it installed as it was already in the car when I bought it used. The dealership can install Lo-Jack as well. When changing ownership, you must call Lo-Jack and transfer all information to your name (sort of like a car title here in MA).

Then, after inspection by a Lo-Jack Technician, they give you the necessary information and certificate.....I like it.

Not so much because I want the car back after it gets stolen, but because it also has the alarm with it and the insurance savings.

just my $.02.....

c'ya!:)
