I have to detail a buddies Ford Explorer & it has typical Ford factory orange peel in the paint (it is black).

What is the best product to use with my UDM to smooth out this finish before doing a Zaino job on it???

It's probably not worth it - you're looking at 10-20 hours of work. Removing orange peel with a UDM would take 1500 grit sanding -> 3000 grit sanding, then PowerGloss or HTEC on a yellow pad followed by P0106ff on a white pad.

You don't want to remove it...there was just a long thread about that. It's not a defect, it's a factory-installed paint damage prevention device!

A UDM will probably not remove orange peel. Orange peel needs to be removed using wet sanding. I've heard it mentioned that if factory paint is sanded down to remove orange peel, there is a chance that the CC will be dangerously thin. Make sure you have a paint gauge.

Ditto. It was put there intentionally by engineers. DON'T screw with it.

:getdown :lol

It would require wetsanding, which removes a lot of paint. It is bad enough that some 5 year old Fords have paint failure already, and if you sanded you would speed up the process even more.

lmao, that's the funniest post on this forum. :goodjob

(that was a funny article)

How ironic. I have a'94 F150 that has some paint issues Im trying to get worked out. I got together with my paint tech today for a little crash course in wetsanding and he did a scratch and some faint orange peel on my truck. Now I know how big a project it's going to be and how many things can go wrong even if I try. Probably time to trade it in for something newer...... Good luck with your wetsanding, should you be so brave

Bestw answer! Don't buy a FORD haha. j/k If you're using a UDM it won't get you the resultsw you want, it'll have to be a rotary.

Thanks for all the responses, I was kind of afraid that was the case.

I will just shine it as well as possible leaving the existing CC as it is I guess.

Yea, don't worry about the orange peel. Even with the orange peel, you will definitely be able to create stunning results with a proper polishing+LSP.

Yea, I won't be overly worried about it. I drive an 06 black Ford Escape Hybrid & it has some typical OP also, but it still looks super when all Zaino'ed up. Actually, on mine the hood looks awesome (it looks like a black mirror) but there is definitely some OP on the sides. I did not want to damage the CC at all as I plan on keeping this truck for a long time (I really love the thing), so I just polished it & then did a multi coat Zaino treatment.

Seriously, people do remove/reduce OP. Some of us were just having a little fun due to a recent dust-up around here. So it can be done, as was said, you just need to be very careful about reduction of the CC thickness and resultant loss of UV resistance.

Yea, I know it CAN be done but I'm not really sure it's worth it if the vehicle is a daily driver that the customer is planning on keeping long term.

Probably the best way to fix orange peel is to get in some sort of light accident where every panel of the truck is damaged. I had a license plate hit my car, and the hood was resprayed, and it came out great as far as orange peel is concerned.

You can make Ford orange peel look great. I wouldnt worry about it.

After a couple of years of the usual annual/bi-annual polishing and the OP will start to disappear anyways. Do it over time instead of all at once and save more CC for your maintenance polishing down the road. Just take of the marring and keep the gloss up for now.
