Best Wax?

Since there is a best sealant thread, ill continue on with the best wax thread. Me, I use:

S100 Paste Wax, Meguiar's #26, and Collinite #845.

I really like all three specially S100. S100 is a really good paste wax and it is easy to work with. I like the fact that S100 is easy to wipe off and the durability and shine is there.

I like and use several waxes. I really have a hard time giving the nod to any wax as "best" other than S100 though. It has everything that an all around good wax needs to have. Great depth, easy to apply, easy to buff off, good durability, incredibly affordable compared to similar performing products, and high performance in other areas. I find S100 to be a great LSP in the winter because it just seems to rinse cleaner than other waxes. I spent one winter comparing waxes on my white Integra and S100 rinsed the cleanest during winter driving. You know how dirty your car gets when driving through the slush? The panels waxed with S100 were less dirty due to dirty slush drying on it than panels used with Souveran, Paste Glaze, Gold Class, Vintage, or Blitz.

S100 isn't a 10 out of 10 in every category, but products that rate 10 in certain areas fall below S100 in others. S100 rates consistently high in every category in my book. At least 7 out of 10 in everything I'm looking for. There is an old saying about car modification. "There is fast, cheap, and reliable. You can have two of them, but not all three." That is so true. Your car can be fast and cheap, but not reliable. Or you can have it be fast and reliable, but not cheap. Or my favorite, cheap and reliable and not fast. Car wax is sort of the same thing. You can have great looks, easy application, and great durability. Pick two, but not all three. Maybe not as apropriate as the car metaphor, but similar. S100 is as close that I have ever come to getting all three.

thanks for the reply jingerbreadman,

to me s100 has all three: easy application, shine, and durability. in addition, i like the fact that i can get the product locally because i only live 15min away from a harley davidson shop and they sell s100 there.

i washed my car today and applied s100. the application was easy and the wiping off party was easy as well. of course my car became shiny as well since s100 provides a good shine. in addition, durability is there for sure because when i used to wax my car in the rainy season using s100, the water would bead really good.

s100 is definitely a really good wax for the money, cheap only $15.

While everyone is singing the praises of S100, don't forget one thing that I happen to really like.
It doesn't stain plastic trim or rubber. :bigups

'doh!! I totally forgot about Nu Finish! I thought we were talking about car wax though. Does hand lotion mixed with paint thinner really fit in this category? ;)

What is a negative of S100?

One of the negatives I have with it is that it has a tendency to attract dust. Like most other paste waxes.

I do have to agree with the fact that the positives far outweigh the negatives. S100 is a great wax for the money.

Yeah, pretty much all waxes attact some amount of dust though. The oils used to create the gloss and the shine have something to do with that. The nice thing about S100 and the dust is that it seems to rinse off cleaner than with other waxes that like to hold on to it. I'd really like to know why that is. I'm wondering if the oils in some waxes take longer to 'dry' (or whatever they do) and some dry into something that holds on to the dust and doesn't let it rinse off.

If you want a neat experiment to try on what I'm talking about, then try this. Wax half a panel with one wax and the other half with another. Do this to as many panels that you want to test product on. You might even want to break the hood up into a grid with tape and just wax in certian areas. That should make the grid still visible after you get it wet. Anyway, however you decide to do it, let the car gather some dust for a few days and then spray it down with a hose. Don't use a mitt or a towel or anything. Just rinse the car with water and see which wax rinsed cleaner. Some of them just keep the dirt on the surface and others release a lot of it. When I have done this experiment in the past I have always had best results with S100. I need to try it again with a couple new waxes and some that have been updated. I haven't tried it against any of the Natty waxes or even with XMT 180 yet. If I wasn't at the end of my detailing season then I'd probably try it on my car this week, but I need to get my winter prep done while I have the chance.

Oh, I just thought of a negative of S100. It smells like crayons. I've been spoiled by waxes that smell awesome like Souveran and anything else that comes from Pinnacle. When I get waxes with no real smell like S100 I get a little bummed out. However, this downside turns into a good side. The product doesn't attract bugs like Souveran does. lol Something about waxing your car with a product that smells like a fruit salad or a pina colada just really seems to attract the gnats. Nothing like adding a little extra protein in the wax as you buff it off, right? lol

What is a negative of S100?
Many. :)
1. Too inexpensive
2. Available OTC
3. No Boutique reputation
4. No cult following
:notme:

Seriously, I can't think of anything that S100 doesn't have as far as a carnauba wax is concerned. :bigups

I do have to agree about the smell of S100. Maybe that's why it's so cheap - no chemical scents to add to the cost. Good point Anthony. I also agree that S100 does seem to rinse clean like you mentioned. I have noticed that about some other sealants as well, most noticeably/recently is NXT 2.0. It does a very good job of "releasing" dirt, etc.

I haven't tried 2.0 yet. I noticed that the first version was a bit of a dust magnet, but I never used it on my own vehicles to do long term testing. I'll have to add 2.0 to my list of products that need to be tested for dust resistance against S100. :bigups

Hey, fine by me. I only wish I had come up with it. lol I don't know where it originated, but it was something I learned when I first started wrenching on cars twenty years ago with my dad and some of his mechanic friends. I've never proven that statement to be wrong.

There's a similar one in mountainbiking (as far as the components go): strong, light, inexpensive. Pick two of those.

S100: that's what I use on my show car, easy to apply easy to remove, leaves a deep wet shine, I don't care
how long it last because the car never sees weather.
It's best to use the S100 cleanser first as a wax prep,
cleaner/polish. when I wash the car the beading is incredible. Best wax I have ever used. My daily drivers
that see weather, get duragloss #105, fc&s,aw for max
durability. I might change over to duragloss on the show car as well.:bigups

The most durable with good looks Zaino , Klasse , Duragloss , and Collinite. For very good looks NXT 2 and S100. Of course it just my opinion.

Are we talking about waxes or sealants in this thread?

Actually I've read the title but wonder if others missed it.
