Best product for removing brake dust from wheels?

I've been trying to clean my wheels but break dust has decided to apply its self to my wheels in a less than favorable manor.

I've tried a few cheaper with trying to get it off but now I'm willing to try something more expensive to try and remove it as I'm at my wits end with it.

Any ideas what I should use?

Thanks, Dan.

If the wheels are neglected for a long period, you may have permanent damage.

Can you describe what kind of car it is, what problem you're having? Have you had a chance to work with any of the better wheel cleaners?

Welcome aboard, Dan!

try some Eagle One A2Z you can find it @ your local autoparts store

and it is a good strong cleaner

clay can also help a good bit

also I am quite sure if you try a search you will find a ton of good info

about removing brake dust

Okay thanks for your suggestions. I was just googling about and I've found this:

GBL Wheel Cleaner

I've not really tried many other cleaners to be honest. I've scrubbed bloody hard though, Haha. Its a 95 Mustang with standard wheels.

Thanks for the help guys.

I use DP gel wheel cleaner, it does its job. Also, i have heard good things about Surf City Garage Beyond Steel Wheel Cleaner, i'm trying that one next.

What is the finish of the wheel. If they're aluminum (brushed or polished) be carefull what you use on them. If they're clear coated, I would try soaking them with Eagle One A2Z and letting it sit for a few before aggitating with a good stiff wheel brush. That stuff is so strong it'll take the wind out of you if you stand too close to it when you spray it.

If that doesn't work, try to clay it but I would say that you're fighting a losing battle in that case.

I use P12S wheel gel with great results. If you have really stubborn stuff you might need to try Megs Wheel Brightener. Really caustic stuff however.

Now i wouldn't try this until we get some feedback from someone else who is a bit more knowledgeable then me about it, but I've used a Mr. Clean magic eraser with pretty good success to get off really stubborn brake dust. however this was on wheels with a clear coat and it potentially could have thinned the clear pretty bad, i really have no idea what the long term consequences or risks are of that method.

Meg's Wheel Brightener is awesome. It works well, but doesn't seem that corrosive to me, at least at 4:1. A2Z is worse to breathe...

DON'T USE ANYTHING ACIDIC ON POLISHED ALUMINUM! Your best bet is to use a 4:1 cut APC to get the heavy stuff off, then polish the rest out. If you use acidic wheel spray on a non coated, polished rim, your going to end up with a hazy, stained and worse looking rim. If it's really bad you'll need to use a more harsh polish to start and then work your way to a finer polish to bring out the shine again. Adams Polish #1 and then #2 would be a good start. Then coat them with a wheel sealer like PoorBoys or Wheelwax to keep them looking good.

It's probably going to take some serious work to get them clean again though. Be prepared to put some time and elbow grease into it. If you keep up with them though, they'll be much easier to keep looking good.
