Best OTC wheel brush for caked on brake dust

Had those exact rims- on my e46 -trust me, there are worse out there...

HOWEVER I have yet to find a brush that last more than 1 or 2 uses- My solution recently has been to buy those green kitchen scouring sponges sort of like the ones that are yellow with a green rough side.... -I'm sure I'll catch flack from the guys around here but the rims I see on an everyday basis are people's cars that don't care/ don't have the time to clean them...ever.

I almost bought wheel acid (wheel brightener) but seriously, the stuff is toxic, and frankly, I think people cop out and use it because it's easy. -Like bringing the atom bomb to a bar fight.

The little green kitchen sponges work great -plus, you squeeze them into every nook and crannies- and the scouring surface is apparently safe for use on non-stick cookware. Bonus.

i have to say i was so impressed with eagle one A2Z wheel cleaner, it removed over 8 months of baked on brake dust on my mom's volvo. it worked a lot better than Meg's Hot Wheels.

If megs APC+ does not work the Wheel Brightner will.

The "Wheel Brightener" contains HF, which is really not something non-professionals (or even professionals) should be using.

Depending on how brave the manufacturer is, they will either promote it for chrome wheels only, or for all kinds of wheels (except Al/Mg wheels). It will remove the brake dust for sure, but before using it you should spend a moment on Google image search for "hydrofluoric acid burn"

In the undissociated state the HF molecule is able to penetrate skin and soft tissue by non-ionic diffusion. Once in the tissue the F anion is able to dissociate and cause liquefactive necrosis of soft tissue, bony erosion, as well as extensive electrolyte abnormalities by binding the cations Ca2+ and Mg2+. This is unusual among acids which typically cause damage via the free H cations resulting in coagulative necrosis and poor tissue penetration.

Hydrofluoric Acid

At the very least you should be using nitrile gloves, goggles and a rubber apron. IMHO Meg's is irresponsible for selling HF containing Hot Rims Chrome cleaner as a consumer product.

For myself I use Turtle Wax's F21 wheel/tire cleaner which seems to work ok, but does need some scrubbing. When my current supply runs out, I'll pick up some TW Ice wheel/tire cleaner which comes with a very nice brush.

I don't think that any non-HF cleaner will be effective without some scrubbing.

Has anyone had any luck with using an old toothbrush?

Toothbrush for the win. For me, a firm bristle worked best.

I just cleaned up my wheels after a year of neglect. Lots of baked on brake dust.

P21S didn't do much.

Westley's didn't do much.

Castrol wheel cleaner was a little better.

Toothpaste removed the baked in dust, but mared the finish a little.

Scotchbrite worked, but mared the finish too much.

Bought some toxic Eagle 1 mag cleaner and got 95% of the baked in dust off.

Covered the wheels with Klasse AIO and carnauba.
