Best drive layout

Whats your favourite drive layout

i like to argue that all the top race cars (F1 , Indy car, NASCAR) in the world are RWD, so for the best performance and handling, the car should be RWD. another argument, with a RWD layout, your front tires just deals with steering the car, while your rear tires just deals with powering the car, so you aren't overstressing the tires like a FWD, where the front tires have to steer and power the car.



of course, any car (RWD, FWD, AWD) if properly setup can be handle great!

FWD vehicles will understeer more easily. RWD vehicles will oversteer more easily. AWD will stay glued to the road better.



If I lived in an area with snow and ice, I would want either FWD, AWD, or 4WD. For regular driving and dealing with just rain, I have no preference.

AWD cars are also prone to a good amount of "pushing" or understeer.

This is because these series regulate this. If there were no regulations on it, how many AWD vs. RWD F1 cars would we see? Who knows. May depend on other factors like weight limits, tire sizes and a million other things. But to say that makes RWD defiitively better would be like saying 3.0L engines are the best because F1 and IRL use them. :)



That said, I'm torn. I'd like to say RWD because it's fun and the cars I'd most like to own are RWD. But if I only had one car and that was it, I would definitely have a front-driver or possibly AWD.
 
I had a modded 95 Eagle Talon TSI AWD and to this day was probably the funnest car I ever drove...it's great too see people's faces off the line when your wheels don't spin - you just launch - ah a thing of beauty -

but the 3.0L is the best engine! :D nah, that is true, they are regulated. well, which is why i think my 2nd point of the argument, about the tires, is a more valid point.



i think the best layout is on the Nissan Skyline, where it can be either RWD or AWD depending on the situation. i forget exactly how it works, but it sounds pretty darn good to me. :bow the thing i don't like about the other AWD is that the torque split between the front and rear is usually at set ratios 60/40, 50/50, 40/60.

Yeah, I remember the Cadillac Deville Jon Moss built for Tim Allen and they all loved the front wheel drive set up. If they had a choice you might see a lot of teams switching. Besides, you can not really compair a full blow race car to a street driven car. ;)
 
I have owned FWD,RWD, & 4X4

I never had a problem driving in bad weather with any of them. Living on Long island I have driven through hurricanes and blizzards

It's more of a matter of the driver knowing the ability of the car that they are driving.

As for the most fun... There is nothing like jumping out (yes jumping out) and locking a set of hubs and throwing it into

4 wheel low and go through the sand or over a 2 foot high snow drift:D



God I miss that truck :(

Thankfully not a real good hit in about 20 years, but hurricane Gloria left me W/O power for 3 days:)

I was just wondering because I'm changing from a FWD Accord to a RWD Skyline:xyxthumbs



I seen a lot of posts saying RWD is a more natural way to drive.

Well, so far I prefer FWD but I have yet to drive an AWD vehicle. If I get the STi like I want to for next year I will let you know. ;)
 
2001civicex- The Subie AWD acts like FWD for the most part, so I think you'll like it.



Stevie_UKAccord- The "natural" thing is why many of us prefer RWD. Because of the way it works *with* the laws of physics, it always seems more natural to me. Even though I've been driving AWDs since the mid-'80s, I *still* find the RWD cars to be more natural; they just do what I expect them to do based on my training and experience.



Biggest downsides of FWD are a) weight shifts off drive wheels during acceleration and b) front tires are asked to do too much stuff at the same time- steer *and* apply power (and this is while a) is happening). But the drive layout is only one of *many* factors, and usually isn't the most important thing. Biggest upside of FWD these days (IMO) is ease of manufacturing- they're easier/cheaper to produce. I've had FWDs from Hondas to Cadillacs to German stuff, and the whole " FWD traction" bit is way over-rated if you ask me.



Heh heh, for all my *I hate FWD*, one of the best driving weekends I've ever had was when I had a CRX at Mid-Ohio. And had I not been in the Quattro (with stability control, etc.) during the "deer incident" I dunno just how it might've turned out. Bottom line- it's what works best *in the given situation* for the driver, who is the most important factor of all.



But when it comes to pure driving enjoyment (sounds like a commercial!) I'll still take RWD every time ;)

oh what kind of Skyline? the RWD one or the GT-R with the high-tech AWD? if it is the GT-R w/AWD, i think that is the best combination. it is RWD until it detects slippage, and then distributes the power to the front wheels accordingly. or something like that.



i'm sure you'll love your Skyline, but just be careful that you don't get over enthusiastic at first. my bro went from FWD to RWD and the bozo got into an accident the first week he had the RWD car (Nissan 240SX) all because he wasn't used to it fishtailing when gasing it while making a turn on a wet road. :nono
 
i would say i cant decide between the 3... their all great in all their own aspects, and different situations... that being said, if i were forced to pick, i would say awd, because it provides the best of both worlds
