best credit card

If the debit card is a combo visa/mastercard yes you can. Use it all the time and never have to pay another bill at the end of the month.

I've got a Blue for Business from American Express. It gives a good discount on certian retailers that I do business with, so that works out well. I've had that one for awhile though, and now that I have done a little more research, I think I might go for the One card. That one earns you 1% cash back that goes into a high yield savings account earning 5% interest. You can also deposit other monies into that account in addition to the 1% AMEX puts in automatically. It is also sort of a neat concept for a card. It is actually a charge based lending card, which means that you can roll over a ballance if you want, but you only pay interest on old purchases. So everything I charge on the card in April will be interest free on the first statement. I can pay it off on the next statement and still avoid interest charges. So technically I can take out a two month loan that I can make work for me and then repay it without penalty. That is the Lending Card part. The Charge Card part is the fact that it doesn't have a preset spending limit. There is a $35 yearly fee, but they give you $50 bucks to deposit into the savings account when you enroll, so that is pretty much waived for the first year and a half. It is a great card if you are credit card saavy and like to make these kinds of things work for you.

Debt is still bad, but there isn't anything wrong with getting kickbacks on money that you have to spend anyway. I put roughly $3000 per month on credit cards that gets paid off every month, so why not pocket an additional $30 bucks a month earning 5% interest on top of it? Anyway, it is a nifty card that is worth exploring.

The other nice thing about going with AMEX is the purchase protection and buyers assurance features that come on the card. Basically it is 'oops insurance' and an extended warranty. I would suggest putting any electronics purchases on an AMEX simply because if you drop your phone and T-Mobile won't replace it, then AMEX will do it for you. I dropped my Blackberry 6 weeks after I got it and it broke good. T-Mobile wouldn't do spit for me, but AMEX had me taken care of in just a couple weeks. They are good benefits to have. :)

I have a debit/ATM card combo through my bank but refuse to use the debit card.

Can you use a debit card for online purchases? If you can, is it more risky than credit card? I just don't like the idea of it, but then again I have never used it.

IMHO, everyone needs a credit card, but no one needs to abuse it or max it out. I only use 2.....my AMEX blue that I use for everything and my platinum visa that I use for parking tickets, Zaino, all other places that don't accept AMEX.

I was raised working off the books, the son of a retailer so cash was always king. I was raised that if you can't afford something, you can't buy it. Basically, think of my parents as the mom from WATERBOY....."Credit cards are the devil!!!!"

Ever since I had a "real" job and never see my paycheck thanks to direct deposit, I really have no choice but to use my CC for mostly everything. I only refuse to use it for stupid little crap like DVD's, CD's lunches, etc. Gas and everything else goes on the card. Balances are alway paid in full when due.

Yes. If the debit card goes through someone like Visa/MC, you can use it just like a card.

But after my fraud incident on my debit card, I'm very paranoid about giving it out. I never use it.

To the OP: Also, keep in mind that unless you're willing to carry multiple cards or a debit card that is visa/MC, you may want to stick with a Visa or MC (mastercard). The reason I say this is because not everyone accepts AMEX or especially Discover. A lot of places do, but some places don't...

and you definitely don't want to be in a situation where you can't pay! This is why I always keep a Visa/MC with me... as a "just in case."

I use a GM mastercard. I've earned $4,500 so far. Too bad they only allow me to use 1-2K at a time. It's also too bad I really don't like GM cars.

I too am looking for a new card. I pay my card off every month as well! My education debt is large enough (> $200K). I don't need any other debt.
