Best color/paint for garage?

I'm getting ready to paint the inside of my garage and apply some floor covering (thinking the stuff at Home Depot with the colored chips). Just windering if it is beteer to use a Flat sheen as opposed to a gloss. I know gloss is easier to wipe down /clean so that is where I'm leaning (semi-gloss).

Just wondering if there are any tips /suggestions before I start.

Thanks,

Blue

Personally I think anything glossier than eggshell would look a little odd in a garage. Paint with gloss is OK for bathrooms but that's about it. Glossy floors are great and the epoxy coating will leave a nice finish.

if you go for it make sure the floor is VERY VERY clean. When you get it painted you will really like it. Looks awsome. Like 2001civicex www.ucoatit.com is the best but it is expensive. I think the stuff at Home Depot or Menards will work well too but they are not usually solvent based and may not work as well or last as long.

In the past I have painted garage floors using a two-part epoxy paint from Sherwin-Williams, (no affiliation), and no one complained after a year of homeowner use. It should be noted, these were clients who took no care to worry about the floor, and in this climate, road salt dominates in the winter...and no peeling.

...just a point to ponder....

I would not go textured because a nice smooth floor is so much easier to clean. The smooth floor will be slick when wet put all you have to do is use a squeegie to get the wetness out the door. If you have a textured floor the sqeegie will not work and it will be a pain. Go smooth and just be careful for wet spots. ;)

BlueZ71... Couldn't get the link to work but are you talking about:

Epoxy Shield? by Rustoleum? I have heard of lots of people using it but no long term yet. I have seen it in a Woodsmith store, indoors on the floor. Tan with color chips looked great!

My father has a solvent based epoxy on his floor, not all that hard but the chemicals and smell involved was all that pleasent, even with resperators I know he got it from Sherwin-Williams no peeling or flaking after three years. Even with the Minnesota salts in the winter. It will scratch though so you don't want to slide anything on it, trash dumpster, pallets, trailer they all scratch it. Other than that his floor looks really good.

Yes, that's it. I'm going to get it and try it out in the next couple weeks. Look for pics.

thanks for all the input!

I painted my shop floor about a year ago.

My bro-in-law is a highend pro painter. On his recommendation, I used PPG's Aquapon 35. I added sand to the A/B mix for 'traction'.

Sustantial preparation, two coats, and patience are required ingredients.

Cost about $55 x 2 plus supplies for a typical 2 car garage. Mine was more, but I have 1200 sf, and two colors.

All in all, I'm glad I went with the professional brand.

Highly recommended. See my gallery.

This is what we spec. for this type of use flooring;

Two-part epoxy paint from Sherwin-Williams (or equivalent manufacturer)
